Scout II Doesn't Always Start!

I was hoping to see either an lx 411 or an lx 412. The 412's are cheaper than the 411's. It looks like the 411's have a printed circuit board attached while the 412's do not. Can you flip yours over and post a pic of the bottom side?

Do you know where this would be printed? Posting the pic now.

No, but I think you're right in needing the more expensive of the two. That grey substance is potting material that encases the circuit board. The cheapest version of it I've seen is on rock auto
for $123 plus shipping. The other one is over a c-note more as you can see below.

In regards to that part, we are thinking of just ditching the prestolite. We're thinking of going with a little more power fullfilling hei dui distributer for the I.h engine. Whats your 2 cents?

Having read through the post I'm gonna put my two cents in here
check all the wire terminal ends also look for any sign of damage to the wiring involved. If its running for a moment and then shutting off it could be resistance building up as the current is flowing through the wires. The wires will get warm to hot as the current flows and will cool down as it sits. That could explain the running now and shut off after a few moments. After it sits it does the whole cycle again. I'm not sure if this is it but double check every connector and wire involved. It could save you a couple bucks! Good luck. I'm happy to see another IH getting a chance to pass to a younger crowd

Checking the wiring and condition of terminals is never a bad idea, but I think we're past that point in this case. The jumper wire from battery to coil bypasses most of the ignition wiring leaving only the two wires from the pickup module to the coil and the spark plug wires in series. The pickup module wires look fine. Failed plug wires would cause poor engine performance, but not the brief running followed by immediate shut down symptoms he is having. This seems like a pretty clear example of a component failure to me.

I agree with you scoutboy, seems to me like we have ruled out pretty much everything it could be, besides the dizz. As far as condition goes, its a new starter solenoid, a new coil, a new battery, the Ford relay looks fine to me, and we bypassed the ig. Switch. So the only other thing to look at is the dizz. Am I right?

I'm sure you're right. Just always a good thing to check the little things that sometimes we skip right over.

Yep.
