Thanks .. It's growing on me ..

Changing game plan with the Big Block motor ...
Had the need for some tools .. Wanted to finish building the 781 heads, but the tooling I have wasn't going to do the job ...

As always needed some bucks to buy what was needed ..

Being the 4-bolt main block was going to be a long time build, I sold it ..
The 2-bolt motor will go in the truck for the time being, I'll find another 4-bolt Mark IV down the road .. And start all over with building a 496" ..

Head tools are on order ..

The Fellow who bought the 4-bolt block wants me to finish building it ..
Looking like it's going to be a stroker 496" afterall .. Got a rotating assembly on order ..
Going in a 1960 Chevy pickup .. Teramax 5 speed tranny .. Should be a fun truck to drive (If ya can keep rear tires on the critter?)

It's a dedicated machine for doing head work on valve seats and guides ..
The way I have it tooled makes for slow work, but I'm not in any hurry ..

End results are the same as using a Sunnen VGS-20 only takes longer to get done ...
(Being 'Old & Slow' myself, it fits right in)

Made a lot of tools for having the ability to work Harley heads ..
The Pan's, Shovel's Sportster's and Evo's bolt to a plate that is clamped to the machine table..
For Knuckleheads had to build it's own fixture in order to clamp them into the machine ...

Open chamber 118 cc ... Since this motor is getting new pistons, going to get some with a dome in order to get close to 9.5 to 1 compression ..

Two more Big Blocks to do something with ... ?

Gen VII 496 ci on the left and a Gen VI 454 ci on the right ..

Might build another truck and stick one of these in it .. ??

The Pepto-Bismol Pink has got to go .. !!

Since the dang thing would fly with a Rat motor in it, paint it to look like a Airplane ...

All the parts for the Mark IV 496" have been chosen by the owner ...
I've made suggestions along the way, but he has the final word on what to get and do ...

Just changed out the stones to the 280 grit ... Won't take long to hone out the .001" and be at finish size ..
Then move the torque plate to the other bank and do it all over again ...

Alrighty then ...
Wanted to check with the piston manufacturer (Wiseco) for their recommendation on the wall finish ..
They said to hone with the 280 grit to .0005" of finish size, then use 400 grit stones for taking out the .0005" ... Got them on order ...

And ....

Been in the mode of installing the oversize valves in my 781 heads ...
Had to buy more tooling to open up the bowls and cut in the intake seat ..

Real close to where the seats needs to be at ...
Some burr action will go down soon and a bit of chamber work ..

The seats are pretty much where they'll be at ....
Took a little meat off the chamber wall to allow for better flow around the O.S. exhaust valve ..
Intakes will see the same work, doing these mods will be adding a few cc's to the chamber's volume ..

Some bowl blending also was done ...

Not sure if I mentioned the guides being made for 11/32" stems instead of 3/8" which was factory stock for Big Block Chevys ..
Benefits = Less weight, and a slight increase in flow numbers ...

Cylinder notching is also on the table to do ..

Found a 4 bolt main Mark IV block to replace the one I sold ..
Going after it this evening ...
Photos of it looks really good, soon to see it up close ..
It's also the last year for the Mark IV's .. 1990

Will be doing another 496 cid stroker with it ..
Been on the hunt for a 4 bolt for a long while, thinking I got super lucky finding this one so close to home ..

Still hadn't got around to taking the Gen VI (L-29) and Gen VII (L-18) apart yet ...

518473304_10234662844890884_766593644290477012_n.jpg

Don't have a need for them, although I might have a need for the Gen VI heads to use on a Mark IV block ??

Spec's on the L-29 Vortec BB head vs a peanut port BB head (PPH) ..

L-29 intake ports = 233.2(S) and 239.5cc (L).
PPH intake ports = 192.4(S) and 198.0cc (L).

L-29 exhaust port = 81.2cc.
PPH exhaust port = 101.3cc.

Chamber volumes. L-29 = 100 cc and PPH = 118. cc.

Approx. CR's on a regular stock, small domed 502, PPH = 8.74CR. and L-29 = 9.74CR.

For a flat-top piston 502, the L-29 would make 9.3CR.
For a stock 454 flat-top P/U truck motor PPH = 7.9CR. and L-29 = 9.0CR!!

Valves = the same for both heads at 2.065"/1.72".

NOTE: Use Fel-Pro headgasket 1017-1 to use L-29 heads on the early IV BB blocks AND check coolant holes CAREFULLY!!!

A VERY GOOD WAY TO UP YOUR OLD P/U MOTOR's POWER, imho !!

Going to put the 88 motorhome 2 bolt 454" motor up for sale ..
Will be a long block with having Gen VI heads ..
Want $2,500 .... Any takers ?
