100 Buck Truck Update

For those of you who have followed the thread on the bb in the IHSTO forum, but no longer visit that site, I figured you deserved an update!!

About a month ago Dad informed me he didn't like the isky lifters we had used when we rebuilt the engine. I wasn't too happy with them either, with two of them being bad out of the box! It seemed as we still had lifterer issues, so Dad had taken it upon himself to buy me a set of replacement lifters, clevite this time!! So, last month we pulled the valve covers off, removed the rocker arm assemblies and push rods and replaced all the lifters. We did it the hard way, with a magnet!! Needless to say after much patience and trial and error we got all 16 out and the new 16 in.

I am pro at taking the valve covers off this engine, as I had done it many times before while we were trouble shooting before the rebuild. I knew exactly what needed to be removed or loosed to get them off. One thing you have to do is loosen the alternator and alternator/ac bracket. While I was under the truck working on the alternator I noticed the clear fuel filter we had installed was about 1/2 full with gunk!! On closer examination it turned out to be the fine central oregon dust we all love. The tank I though was okay, turns out it's been full of crap this entire time, and can most likely be blamed for all the "carb" problems I have been having over the past year.

So, tonight we put that theroy to the test. We rigged up a old electric pump Dad had, ran gas out of a clean gas can, with clean new fuel line. We pump gas up the carb and turned it over a few times. I gave it one shot of gas, Dad closed the choke and we gave it a try. The truck fired right off and just ran!! It ran great!!! No misses, no wildly bouncing fuel pressure nothing, it just ran!!

Now something really odd happened. We had turned the truck over for about 5 second before we pumped gas to the carb, then we ran it for about 10 second before gas spurted out of the old fuel line. I had disconnected it from the manual fuel pump but had not plugged it! It took all that time, when it should have been pumping to finally pump.

So, we can honestly say now the problem has been fuel delievery to the carb, not the carb itself. Months and months ago Mike, had hypothesised this and we decided it was going to be the trouble shooting tact to take. His idea was get good fuel and fuel pressure to the carb and go from there. In a few weeks I'll be back at Dad's house to drop the tank, clean it and put in new fuel lines and filters, then go from there.

Needless to say I am really happy!

What are you driving these days carl?

The $100 is still down, the diesel is busted, the rock Scout isn't street legal... ????

Great news on the forward progress finally!

We'll need to open all them carbs and clean out any siltation, should be all that's needed. Then figger out which carb is gonna live there in the long term so we can finish up the dial in once we can run it down the road with an exhaust system and it's legal!

I have inherited my parents dodge intrepid and am getting spoiled !! it has cruise control, air conditioning and gets about 24 mpg on the freeway !!

Dad and I will be working on the truck again on Tuesday the 18th . the short plan is to remove the tank on the passenger's side, give it a good cleaning, then replace the fuel line up to the carb with new fuel filters and see where that gets us . we still had a few lifter pumping up last night as it was the first time fired since swapping the lifters out, but it should be ready to roll, once the tank is cleaned.

I haven't completed my research yet...but I'll soon be "recommending" a flexible fuel hose/material that will not be affected by this alkeeshit fuel we're being forced into using. It's been around for years for just this reason but is not a normal stocking item in typical parts houses...yet.

Since the fuel tank connections on these rigs are difficult to access, we need to upgrade what we do onna daily basis. Pay attention in particular to the flex sections on the filler necks. And because IH used several different diameters of filler necks on fullsize stuff, with some strange molded hose segments, that need mucho attention also.

I left a 2 foot section of plain old gates fuel hose submerged in a can to run miz phelps three weeks ago, shit swoll up about 1/3rd more than normal and got real spongy, when I laid it out to dry off, it turned to a rubber rock.

I got three carbs down now all with obvious alkeegazz attack. I'm currently running sta-bil in all short and long term fuel containers, only thing I know to do for now.

I am going to clean the passenger's side tank first, and on the fill side it has very little rubber. It's just a small section about 3" long at most, connecting the metal filler to the metal spout on the tank. As far as line to the carb, I'll have to look into it, but honestly this tank isn't that hard to drop. I have fixed the problem stap on the rear, so it will be a 10 minute job at most. The driver's side is a different story, so we May need to develope work around for it eventually.

Thanks for all the input Mike!

The factory nylon fuel line is perfect for use with "alcohol enhanced" fuels, it is used on modern e85 compatible rigs.

If you need to replace some of it, head to the local hd truck supplier and ask for air brake hose. You need to use either the spring style clamps or "fuel injection hose" style clamps to prevent the distortion of the tube caused by the typical worm gear clamps.

Like dorman 55172 or 55173.

The oem nylon fuel tubing used in the IH oem liquid/vapor applications is undergoing meltdown right now eric. Otherwise I would not have mentioned this. Some folks are running completely oem fuel delivery systems, some are running systems highly modded. And I'm not talking any efi conversions which are a whole other issue.

According to the research I've done, "air brake tubing" (and I have several samples of that kind of stuff from my former occupation) is certainly not rated for fuel immersion. Not even the stuff rated for pressurized hydraulic apps. But there are many "flexible" hose products that are. And these products will simply substitute directly for common fuel-rated hose applications. You won't find that stuff in pre-cut, looped packages at wallyworld though.

E85 is not the concern here, e10 is since that is all we can currently stick in the tank in many markets.

So carl...if we planned another overnighter at the south waldo rv park and boneyard for dec. 5 after the IHSTO xmas shindig, could we actually accomplish anything the next day to get this rig on the road?? Just like last year?

I know we could accomplish stuff on Mom's s80!

We're available at this point.

You'll have to talk to Dad, as I will be working! If you two want to have some fun and wrench on it, I am by no means going to stop you! I'll point him this way and see what he says.

Thank you for the offer!

Let's plan on it; I thought we were anyway. You don't want to drive back home after the party, do you? We will find something to work on. I hope to have a paint plan in place for Mom's s80 with ss2 by then, if not sooner. I'm sure we can find something to do.

Ok, we're in! Reserve us that primo camp space with the view of the lake and the mountains and the ocean!

Dawgs finally get to make a road trip!

I'm I still supposed to bring home a windshield or anything else yawl were holding for me and the compadres???? Seems like maybe some door panels??

Has it been a year since we last did this???

Let's see, I can do one mountain if you look hard enough, a small creek down the street, but no ocean. Sorry.

Iirc, the windshield is for drew, but I believe the door panels are for wilbur, I think. You can have the whole door, if you want.

Yep, it's almost been a year. Hard to believe. Hope everything works out so you can make it up here.

Well, what I thought was going to be an easy clean and reinstall has turned into a much bigger ordeal. Dad and I last week emptied out all the gas that was in the tank, through a stainer and this is what we found. My crud in the tank problem has just been upgraded to a sever case of internal rusting!!

tank-rust-1.jpg

Once all the gas was out, then we took a look inside. Every surface in the tank is coated and covered with rust!! Good news is the tank is solid, and once the inside is cleaned out we'll be good to coat it and go!

the por-15 kit should be on it's way!

Holy crap! Carl. Good thing you caught it while it was still in good enough shape. It's gonna be quite a nice truck once you've been through everything.

With tank troubles Dad and Mike suggested I pull the fuel cell out of the crawler and install it temporarily into my pickup. So yesterday I went about doing it. I got it out and mounted in the bed while Dad swapped on Holley #2 that I got from Mike. Mike if you don't remember it is the reverse idle unit from terry d. We ran new fuel line to the valve and redid some of the spaghetti fuel line mess I had under the hood. Once that was done we used a 12 volt pump to pump up through the filter, which it did until sediment clogged the new filter. Dad and I cleaner it all out and hooked up to the crab once the fuel ran clean. Then once the battery was charged we test fired.

It ran and even idled! But it ran like a typical truck that needs to be tuned. With months of trouble shooting and tuning I have no idea where the idle it or where the fast idle cam is set at. We had some minor backfires through the carb, but the truck ran.

So Mike it's there waiting for you!
