You can have it tested for free at most any auto parts store. I'd do that before just buying another. That bulb shouldn't stay lit. It has two wires right? And you hooked one wire to one side of the 14 gauge and the other wire to the other side after snipping in two?
 
Did you check the voltage at the battery after hooking up the bulb? It could be staying lit because the battery charge is depleted and it will go out once the charge has been topped off.
