Rubicon Run 2013

Well, I've grown tired of riding shotgun (no offense Matt : ), and have spent the last several months getting my Scout in condition to run the trail. With a little luck, and some more money, I should be ready this year.

In the past, we have always gone in early September, and usually during the marlin crawler roundup. This year labor day and the cantina for the con is on August 31-September 2. How about the next weekend (I.e. September 6-8)? We would meet Friday morning at loon and get to buck island sometime Friday. Hang out on Saturday and leave Sunday morning. We could also go September 13-15, but that is the annual marlin crawler roundup, and it is usually pretty busy. We could also go the week after (September 20-22). Post up and let us all know.

Didn't see this post, just posted in the norcal section.

What you don't like running dot for me?

Taking care of some weak spots on the Scout that the hell hole trip exposed. Should have it ready to go by the end of the month. If not, will you have an open seat or is your gf going? Remember I can roll bigger rocks than she can :d

Yeah, the lip on that 14 bolt hangs down several inches. I've cursed that lip many times.

This year I think a friend is going with, as long as we go one of the September dates. The gf has a couple baby showers to go to those same weekends, so I'm hoping the rubicon trip goes forward so I'll have a good excuse not to go to the showers.

All parts, except the hubs have arrived. I sent the hubs to warn for warranty repair. Right now I have a bare rear axle sitting under the Scout. Need to install gears, locker, axle shafts.
Plus working on the anti wrap bar, but it needs to be welded to the axle housing. I might try and weld it under the truck, but it's not much fun getting splattered with molten bb's. My welding coat is not leather, so of little help there. Pulling the axle out will take more time, but might be the best way to go.

I should have it back on its feet in 2 weeks.

Hadn't put that 14 bolt lip on the list of things to do, but might see about welding in a wedge to help slide over rocks rather than smacking into the flat lip. The 60 in my yellow Scout has a small skid plate welded to it, that might work for the 14 bolt as well.

Other things on the list are:

steering stops, cut the old ones out and put in longer bolts to prevent the arms from turning too sharp and binding the axle shafts and putting added stress on the steering box. Weld some stops on the c's.

Auxilary fan, picked up a 14" electric fan (2800 cfm), hoping that adds enough air flow at lower rpms and keeps the temp under 190.

New battery, the battery that powers my winch died, so I replaced that.

Wiring, moving the alternator wire from the amp meter gauge to the power block inside the engine compartment.

Should have it ready to go by September.

Based upon the responses, it looks like the September 13-15 or 20-22 are most likely. I won't be ready to go by September 6, and it doesn't look like you two will either. I still need to reassemble my transfer case, reinstall it in its re-clocked position, and build a front driveshaft. I also need a spare, install a larger fan, install a pinion guard, and build sliders for the rear quarter panels.

The list will never end. But in the end you just have take it out.

Rocker protection is a must to prevent damage without having to get spotted through every tough section.

Pinion guard is a great, Matt and I both have one out back.

Did not get a darn thing done this weekend. Too, much stuff going on.

I got the rewiring done, the fan installed, the battery installed and the steering stops adjusted properly this weekend. Just have to weld some stops to the c's and the wedge under the 14 bolt and I should be good to go.

Sept 20-22 sounds good to me. Gives everybody enough time to get their junk together. Temp May be a little cooler then too, my pig hates the heat :mad5:

I called IHPA today about the Chevy outer conversion. I'll have it figured out by September or johnnie walker and I will be walking.

:out:

what axle do you have in the Scout? I never looked when we we're out on the trail

every time I see IHPA, my brain thinks indian pale ale

It's the stock 44 but I doubt I'll be going through with the Chevy outers. The warns that were on there have served me well for 10+ years. On a side note, I will be trying out a new stove, my second hand partner stove. This thing is over built.

I've still got to figure out why my rig wont start after it gets hot. I have the Ford relay and a new quick wire kit. I'll be sure to bring my remote starter Craig. I'm sure you appreciate that too.

Warn just sent me my new replacement hubs, so the plan is to get them installed. I've been busy with my daughter and collage.

Let me know if you need help with anything, I'm free in the evenings after work or this coming weekend.

Sean,
I'm sure others have their opinions, but have you tried using a heat resistant solenoid? Napa part number st124. I once had trouble with heat as well, didn't think the Ford relay would fix anything, and found this solenoid referred to on binder planet. It works fine now and no problem with the heat. I suspect the Ford relay is just a band aid that gets around the problem of not having the correct solenoid. The solenoid should come with a shorter return spring as well. If it doesn't, try to find it as well. I think the two work together. Bp says GM part number # 1958679. Mine already had the short return spring so I did not need to buy it separately.
