Rubicon Run 2013

So it looks like this run will be the weekend of the 21-22? When were you guys thinking about hittin' the trail? I have a run planned that weekend up there with some buddies and we're probably gonna head in Friday morning. Was hoping to meet up with you guys.

let me know if you need help with anything, I'm free in the evenings after work or this coming weekend.

Sweet!! I've been killing myself the last couple days. Having an extra pair of hands would be great.

I got the anti wrap bar installed. I would have pulled the axle to welded it, but just needed to get it done. So the welds look like crap. I should have just stick welded it. I tried the new mig welder. Which is fine except for over head welding.

I dropped the drive line off at the shop as it needed some attn. Too.

I got the gears installed and just need to seal up the cover and install the axles.

Things to finish just to drive around the block.

Install driveline.
Install axles
install skid plate and then drill and tap new cross member to help spread the load from the anti wrap bar..
Clean and install diff cover.
Install hubs
install tires.
Weld on sway bar brackets
weld on brake brackets
weld on shock brackets
install shocks

clean out a crap load of extra parts, nuts, bolts, tools, etc. From the inside. The Scout has become an extra storage space during the rebuild.

As for time meeting up on Friday morning. I'm open.
Sean has the farthest to drive, so he will need to post up.

Nope, on the first page we planned on September 20-22. We typically meet Friday morning at loon. We typically camp at buck island Friday and Saturday, if we can make it there, then head out on Sunday. Welcome to meet up, although we will have to pick a time. Sean does have the farthest to go. I'd like to get started early to avoid the heat and in case of break downs.

Sean, if it helps, I do have a spare bedroom and bed. You're welcome to it for Friday night.

Friday night, won't we be on the trail Friday night? If we can get our shit together, hope to be at the trailhead by 9:00 Friday morning, and hit the trail by 10. Also will depend on sean and his buddy mr walker's  schedule. Do you guys want to roll through gtown or up ice house road?

Haven't heard from michael, is he planning on going?

Craig, give me a call and let me know when you want me to come over and give you a hand.

Sorry, meant Thursday night. Timing sounds right to me. I think ice house is a shorter route for us?

Sounds good. I will plan on being there at 9am on Friday morning. Big blue Scout with a toyota and a heep (maybe 1 or 2 more rigs). Sounds like our plans are the same - camp at buck island Friday and Saturday nights, run down to springs and back on Saturday, head back out to loon Sunday.

sean,
I'm sure others have their opinions, but have you tried using a heat resistant solenoid? Napa part number st124. I once had trouble with heat as well, didn't think the Ford relay would fix anything, and found this solenoid referred to on binder planet. It works fine now and no problem with the heat. I suspect the Ford relay is just a band aid that gets around the problem of not having the correct solenoid. The solenoid should come with a shorter return spring as well. If it doesn't, try to find it as well. I think the two work together. Bp says GM part number # 1958679. Mine already had the short return spring so I did not need to buy it separately.

Since I've been back from hell my rig won't start with the key. I've swapped the solenoid and that's not the issue. It's somewhere else. I've pulled all the fuses that are in the new fuse pannel and it started for a second. Then nothing for an hour. Pulled agin and nothing. Tap here, pound there. Nothing. It's perplexing. Maybe the key/column.....

Leaving Friday morning would be an early start, like 5am early. Jessie, I May take you up on your offer. Leave here Thursday evening and get to sacramento that that night. Eiether way I'll be there Friday morning.

I assume by what you mean by it won't start is that it won't turn over? Is it an automatic? Have you tried the neutral safety switch? That switch provides a ground, when in park or neutral, that operates the factory relay and put 12 volts to the solenoid. It is on the side of your tranny, near the shifter linkage, and has three prongs. I forgot which poles need to be jumped, but I have it written down at home. I can look if need be. You could also try starting it in neutral or while jiggling the shifter.

Thursday night still works.

Jessie, its a standard transmision. I'm begging to think it's a loose wire under the dash. When you turn the key it doesn't send 12 volts to the ammeter on the dash. The harness is labeled pretty well, ill just need to spend some quality time with it.

I'll leave after my kids go to bed. Thanks for hosting.

No problem. If it isn't too late, I can test some things with a voltmeter and see if we can't track it down, or at least reduce the number of possible causes, before we hit the trail.

I don't know if this could be your starting issue, but there is a switch on the steering column that has a combination of magnets, springs and metal rod that engages when the key tumbler is turned. The one in my yellow Scout was dirty and corroded, it was doing the samething yours is. Jesse took it apart and cleaned it and it's working fine now.

most parts stores will have that part in stock. Just ask for the starter switch for a 73 vega.

Matt's yellow Scout is right hand drive. We considered buying a new one, but when we compared a standard left hand drive switch to the right hand drive switch, side by side, the right hand drive switch was clearly different and incompatible. There is no listing for a right hand drive starter switch, Scout or vega (I didn't have a problem finding a listing for a Scout starter switch). We had to take it apart and clean it. But you're right, it would not have been worth the trouble to take it apart and clean it if a new one was available. In this case, one wasn't.

Taking that switch out is a pita :icon_sweatdrop:, but if sean has checked everything else and can't find a problem, he May have to pull it.

Is the switch (left-hand drive) available at the large parts stores, under a Scout II? I looked at IHPA's switch section and didn't see it...did I miss it?

It's a miracle! She healed her self. Power of prayer? Either way, I'll try to make it early enough jessie, it'll be a big help to split up the trip to loon.

On a side note, it turns out boiling omelette's in a ziplock bag does not increase estrogen levels.

I'm installing a push button remote starter so I can bypass that switch. Key will still need to be in the on position so you just can't jump in it and push the button and take off. What it does do is give me another option to start the truck if the switch acts up.

Installing a cs144 alternator for more juice for the fans.

Were you worried that your 5 o'clock shadow was waiting until 6?

From the ziploc website:
can I boil in ziploc® brand bags?
No. Ziploc® brand bags are not designed to withstand the extreme heat of boiling.

But on the same site: it's total fine to nuke em in the microwave

turns out the bags can become soft at 195 degrees and that's why it's not recommended. Could be a liability issue with molten cheese burning people if the bag leaked.

The glad website says to use freezer bags as they are made with thicker plastic.

Are you bringing a case of bottle water too:out:

Matt helped me finish up the Scout so I could get it started and drive it.

Looks like I bent my front drive shaft to the point its an issue I have a spare and will change it out.
Once that is done, a good steam cleaning of the inside and I'm ready to start packing.

Went to Craig's yesterday and got the steering stops welded in and modified the lip on the 14 bolt. Got my remote starter installed tonight. Last thing to do is get the cs144 installed.

Craig, is this the connector I need?

standard motor products alternator connector s-838 : amazon.com : automotive
