My husband just bought me a Scout. I believe that is is from somewhere on the 60's but cannot determine. I have the vin, but it confuses the decoders. I am trying to find the year of it and figure out how to get a title for it so that I can drive it. It is almost miniature compared to his 1974, and cute, or will be when I get done with it. ;)

Welcome! What a thoughtful husband you have buying you a Scout. Cute when you get done with it, eh? Does that mean a pink paint scheme is in the future?:icon_heart::yikes: only kidding. If it takes pink paint to get more girls involved, I'm fine with it.
The serial numbering system of these older vehicles doesn't jive well with the modern vin system, though there should still be a way to decode your numbers. I just don't happen to know what it is. Even the titles can be a bit misleading as vehicles were commonly titled on the sale date rather than the build date back then. Pictures are the best way to id these pigs. The front grille area, interior/instrument panel, and under the hood/engine bay will get us pretty close on the year.

New here, found this site doing a search for information on an s series dump that I have.
My son and I are looking to do a '99 7.3 swap. Anyone try this? It had a 345 in it.
Any and all help would be a huge help, thanks in advance, Mike.

An s-series with an sv engine is a bit of an oddity.

Most of the gas engines used in the s-series were mv engines.

I can't say that I have ever seen an s-series with an sv engine but since we are talking about ihc almost anything from the factory is a possibility.

Swapping in a 6.9/7.3 should be a relatively easy swap.

The frame is most likely already drilled to accept the motor mounts since the mv engine was the platform upon which the 6.9/7.3 was built.

Iirc, by the time the s-series was built the hydraulic brakes had hydroboost rather than hydravac boosted brakes. If you have hydroboost you won't have any problems. If you should have hydravac boosted brakes you will need to make sure you get a vacuum pump to provide vacuum for the brake booster. If the donor engine is out a Ford product it most likely will have the vacuum pump on it.

Since you are talking about swapping in a '99 vintage engine, make sure you get all of the black boxes and wiring harnesses that go with it. If you don't you won't be able to get the engine to run.

Good luck and keep us posted as to your progress.

Good day all! I am new to the site, not so new to the binder world. Current rig: 1977 sii 345, 727 auto. Resto. I had a '73 sii in high school, and it has taken me 30+ years to get back to it. Thanks for all the great info I have read so far, looking for lots more info.

Hey

new guy... Been reading all I can for days and figured time to join. I know I'm going to need the help!

First car was a Scout, no seats, no dash, no exhaust. Got her on the road with blood sweat and tears!

Just purchased a west coast '72 345 4sp manual after stalking the "for sales" for a year and having it shipped east now. She suffers from an unfortunate paint job and needs to be brought back to her classic IH beauty.

I read somewhere that when starting your project it is a good idea to keep your intended use front and center because your Scout can't be good at everything, so here goes:

80% summer cruiser (to much road salt nov - mar)
15% hunt, fish, tow
5% let wife and kids drive

needs
safety - four way disc break conversion?, head light upgrade
go - only runs with manual choke on
looks - new paint (solid body), interior is great

Welcome andrew! Once you home in on your specific questions, don't hesitate to post them in the appropriate subsection, if you can't find existing answers via forum search. We'll do our best to guide you along.

Scoutboy74 .... Thanks, big fan after reading through posts. Whatever happened to that kid with the "ignition" issues, seemed like he was almost there.

Anyway, look forward to more reading.

Hello, jake up here in north dakota just picked up a 73 1110 saved it from rotting in a feild have motor out and preping a new one to go in then hope to have her running. Found the site though google and have been using the forum ever since. Thanks for the help and all the future help I will need

My bad I didn't do this.

My name is Matt and I live in reno nv, I found this forum by buying parts from this vender for my Scout fairly recently. I have been playing with IH trucks for a while and recently got into the Scout game. With the trucks there isn't a lot available so I have just built what I want and I have my own personal junkyard for travelettes behind my house. scouts seem much easier to source the parts for.

My current IH list consists of 5 travelettes from 1959 to 1965, 1 regular cab truck 1967, a '65 Travelall and 2 Scout 800's.

Hello.
I am a new member. Bought a 1977 traveler last fall for $300. They guy said it hadnt run in 12 years and the tranny was broke. My plan was to cut it down, scrap everything except frame and axles, and put a 1955 willys wagon on it. Out of curiosity, I rebult the carb, poured some fuel in, and it ran. So, I put on a new master cylinder, wheel cylinders, cleaned the tank, poured fluid in the tranny, and tuned it up. It ran flawlessly, with lots of torque, burns no oil, and the engine is as quiet and a new car. Last week, suddenly, it refused to low idle. I shut it off, and now it wont start. I have rebuilt the carb again, new plugs and dizzy cap. Still no start. I have read many posts on this issue, but nothing seems to work. It has the "gold box". I have 12 volts at coil. So, if nothing works, I guess its going to the choppin' block.
Any info would help.
Thanks.

Howdy y'all from tulsa.

I found this forum looking for parts and answers on google, bing, yahoo...blah, blah, blah.

These guys at IH Parts America are awesome and have already made joining worth while. They answered my first question the same morning I posted it and are so knowledgable on all things IH that I will be spending a lot of time on this site and spending my kids' college funds with them, to properly fix the po's screw ups on my '64 Scout 80.

Thank you guys for sharing your passion and knowledge with us minions!

Hello from boise!! Had to have this 76 traveler found on craigslist last year. Since then it's been gutted .... But not going crazy with a "full frame off restoration"....... Ha ha ha

have to say IH guys are very patient, especially Chad... Appreciate you taking the time to "draw pics" over the phone!

Thanks!

new guy on the forum

Picking up my new Scout 2 in the morning. Complete orig owner, everything is there. Excellent condition. My eyes are always bigger than my wallet. Excited, orig thought it was an 80, but it sank in the mud and looked shorter than it was, found out it was the 2 with the v8. At this point, dont even know which engine, just know that there's no dings or dents and I gave five bones for it. Cant wait to start working on it. Gonna be on a fork lift for a steam clean tomorrow.
