michael's 62 Scout restoration thread - binder planet forums

The Scout is at a dd status, but the cam bearings are going out, so spring break will see a trip over to maybenville to get an overhaul.:winky: the goal it to have a leak free and tick free IH 196 if that's possible. Will be using a rebuilt rocker assembly from Jeff at IHOnly north:icon_smile: and all new gaskets and bearings.
Future plans are to install my waggy 44's once I get my draglink and pitman arm from binderbound.:dita: regear to 4.88's and power locks front and rear. Put on 33-35's. Install some damn foil backed bubble wrap under the hood, on the firewall, and in the trans tunnel cover to make the noise level bearable on long trips. This way, I might feel obligated to save up some dough and put it a kickin sound system. You know, the can you hear me now kind....:winky: 2 12" subs mounted behind the seats in the bulkead, 2 6x9's, 2 5's and maybe some little tweeters. Need to get the volume back up to normal Scout highway cruisin decibels. this will all happen in good time, as the 3.73's and 33's might make it pretty nice as third will be higher and I'll be able to cruise at 60 doing 3000 rpm's. 4th will get me up to 65 doing 2550 rpm's. I think it will be a fairly good combo, but we will see as off the line power will suck...
To be continued...

Had me speedometer grind and then make a snapping noise 2 weeks ago, and finally got around to fixing it. Bought a used speedo from a fellow IHSTO member and it seems to be in great shape. Pulled the dash and the speedo was completely frozen. Swapped out the mileage counters between the 2, painted the inner black ring, cleaned the face, polished the chrome ring, and put it all back together. Fixed some grounding issues too. Pulled out of the garage and nothing!:nono: :dita: pulled the speedo cable out from the tcase and found 2 pieces!:winky: there was a nice snarly mess inside the cable sleeve, so I'll need to get a new cable. Those speedo cables are pretty strong and I was surprised it broke! I would have figured it would have rounded out the speedo input. Hopefully this speedo will not bounce around like the other one....

Old tie rods make good hardtop props!

Well, the worst possible has been discovered over the past 2 days....:icon_gonk: down here at mayben's and yanked the engine out of the Scout, took it apart and discovered: crank needs ground, camshaft ground, and engine bored:icon_exclaim: so, the motor is gettin boxed up and stored here, until summer roles around and the money comes in. Will have to bring down a trailer and haul the Scout home. Everything seems to end up for the worse on this Scout..... by the time I'm done with it everything will be new!:rolleyes5: only item I have left is the transmission....:icon_redface: now I got to either get the rusty travelette into dd status, or the 1210.... Scout will be on hold for 3 months or so now. Would probably be cheaper to swap in the entire drivetrain of something else and get better mileage, but keeping this Scout IH is more important to me. I've done too much work and spent too much money to just let it fade away! So this will conclude the Scout build for a long while...

Mikeesquared is a bit disappointed about hiz motorbuild plans goin' astray, but all this happened 'cause it's supposed to!

Puttin' new lifters onna woreout camshaft was a recipe for disaster anyhoo, in less than 500 miles or so, them new lifters looked like shit...but that wuz the best part of what he found!

Never seen an IH motor with rod and main journals scored as bad and deep as this one. This motor was treated real poorly in it's former life and obviously was run with coolant in the oil.

Compression on #3 wuz way down, that's due to the rings on that hole been whittled away (along with the cylinder wall) to near nuthin'.

'course we knew tha cam bearings wuz shit since the oil pressure has been comin' and goin' (mostly goin') for quite awhile. This had nuthin' ta do with that oil stuff he wrote about awhile back...if ya ain't got cam bearings ya ain't got shit!

Cam has been goin' flat a good while no doubt, that seems to be a real common item regarding only I-4 oem cams. Dave saw the same thing in the I-4 motors only back in the day, both in the dealership and at the factory branch where he delt with bulk remans of these motors in fleet service. He's got some deep "opinions" about why that was/is...but sez that when IH engineering was approached about that issue, they just didn't "respond".

The oem I-4 cam deal don't matter now anyway, the refurbished/ground cams we're sourcing for the I-4 motors are done up right so flt cam stuff is not an issue for the future. And mikeesquare is gonna git one of those.

An exchange 196 crank kit can be hard to source, so mikeesquare's core is gonna git sent to the supplier and done up when the cash flows again.

The block is decent inside and real clean (should be since it had coolant bathing it for years). Core plugs have already been replaced, so it'll just get a bore/hone job locally and then we'll complete the cleanup after that. Cam bearing tool pretty much lives here now but belongs to dave until I git enuff o-bucks to buy my own.

We ain't ripped the head down yet, but it will go to a local machine shop for a seat and valve cut, we'll do the guides and prep work before it gets sent out.

No need for a replacement timing set, them gears are in fine shape.

Oh yeah...that flywheel face really suks, so it's gonna git cut too...mikee can not have my fresh one that I scruud shane out of!!!

Went on a 300 mile trip on Saturday driving the travelette and hauling a trailer the whole way. Went up to newberg, picked up a Dana 70 and auto/tcase combo for terry's 6bt diesel and then cruised down I-5 to leaburg to drop off mayben's new axle and the trans for a rebuild. Picked up my engine less Scout and hauled the Scout home, offloaded it, took the trailer back to the neighbors, and then loaded the saws in and headed down the road for some firewood cuttin':icon_twisted: now that the Scout's at home, it'll get some attention to a dual mc conversion, sound deadening, swapped t-cases, and touch ups, while the engine rebuild is put off until early summer. Hopefully it will be ready for the Binder Bee!...... Have the travelette to do as well, so when I get tired of one, I can work on the other.:icon_gonk:

Then engine should be in southworth with a list of machine work to be done thanks to mr. Mayben! the cam is getting sent out to be ground as well. In the next couple weeks it should be all assembled and ready to drop back into my Scout. So I got to work on the engine mounts this weekend and started/finished them. Took a while but in the end I'm satisfied. Also, I found a power steering box that is almost a perfect bolt in for an s80 that it is ridiculous. Only shortening of the column is required. I decided to make a 2 piece shaft using a pto shaft coupling. While I was getting the engine into the Scout I managed to cave in the nose of the hood!:yikes: . Didn't get a pic, but it matches ian's Scout now....:hand: character building I guess.... Got the correct spacers for my highsteer arms thanks to Jeff, picked up a turbo from major screwup that will go on the engine once it's broken in, and some dom for the waggy 44's. Just need a little more work to get the axles ready for install. Then I will be SOA with some negative caster! No positive for me anymore!:ciappa:

Aha! I wondered how long it would take..... Right now I can say that it was out of a 71 1110 2wd pickup. It'll get researched to see if they are still available. It has the same bolt pattern as the ross gear boxes and doesn't interfere with the sheetmetal. I'll let you all know what I find out. Just need to go write down the model #'s.

Your junkpile is on the floor in the "dirty" room at southworth's as of 10:30a this morning. I also tossed in the timing cover for cleanup, no baking on it, it gits a detergent wash in the blast cabinet.

I'll email ya the repair order copy in the morning after I scan it.

The small ends of the rods don't look so nice afterall, they should have been protected after being cleaned instead of being thrown inna box to rust. So they are gonna torque the caps and go through the rods for matching and straightness, no reason to balance a crank when the rods are shit!

The cam won't go out for processing prolly until Thursday.

10 mins apparently. I'm web wheeling till I get my driveshafts shortened. Actually I'm walking to work too.

Never any parts available lists a standard and reverse rotation gear box for $169 and $209 respectively (+core). They don't show 2wd as an option so it might not be right. If it is and even they list it there should be some good suppliers around?

I got a fair amount done this weekend. Thanks to terry, I was able to get the dom that I got from him bored out accordingly for the 7/8"-18 bungs and appropriate tre's. Metal lathe's are awesome! Welded them up when I got home as they were a perfect fit. The only problem now is the pitman arm is an inch too long and interferes with the tie rod. Well, I have some clearance, but not enough if the axle moved forward. So now I have some sourcing to do. Took out the old axles, and swapped in my waggy Dana 44's and am really pleased with the results. The added width seems like it will make me a little more stable than the narrow s80 Dana 27's... Also, with the 35's and SOA, I'm a tad taller.:yesnod: we'll see how the 3.73's do. With the 4speed, 3.73's, and 35" tires I'm just a tad lower gearing than the 3 speed, 4.27's, and 31" tires. With the lower gears and larger tires, it'll be like I'm in od in 4th comparitively speaking to a stock Scout. I was going to go with 4.88's and a warn od, but that May never happen. Having 8 possible forward speeds is pretty tempting though!:hand: just is more money that I can't be spending!:yikes: the engine rebuild is good enough for 1 year...

Nice michael!

I can't tell by the pics, but would a wagoneer pitman arm help?
Might be too short and too straight (save the jokes), but worth a look.
That's how we went on the girl Scout.

Must be nice to be young and full of energy:p

I second that, I went to a waggy pitman arm on pink.

Shorter and straight would do the trick. In this instance anyway...:hand: my pitman arm is currently about 7" long from center to center. Something around 6" would work. If you happen to have an extra lying around and would like to sell send me a pm. Now I just have to fill the other end of the box with a steering bell coupler..... The power steering boxes are different from the early scouts manual steering boxes. The bell's splined end is larger then the small splined ross box, smaller than the large splined early ross box and has a flat master spline. Might have to steal one off of the orange truck again.... Whatever. Does anybody know if chryfordlet's used steering bell couplers on their saginaw power steering boxes? Cause then I could go junk yard scrounging.

looks good! You going to make the next wheeling trip?

I wish, but considering the engine is still at southworth and the cam is probably still being worked on, I doubt I will get it all put back together this weekend. Then, I doubt I would want to take it wheeling before it was at least a little broken in.... When is the next wheeling trip going to be? Right now I still have to go cut up some driveshafts and shorten them for the Scout as the SOA made the old driveshafts too short. I will steal the rear shaft from the 68 1300 and use it for the rear. If it vibrates, then I'll have it balanced. But until then I'm going at it redneck style!:ihih: at this point I'm just hoping I can get it put toghether before school and winter starts! Having this thing for 2 1/2 years and only driving it for 6 months is starting to really get at me. First it was the 152, then the t90 went out, then the 196 went out (or it was already gone when I put it in!). So right now I have new axles, trans, and an engine soon!

Nice work, michael...

An observation -- I think you need longer u-bolts on your axles. I think there should 1/4" - 1/2" of threads showing above the nut. Not good to have a torqued nut at the top of the threads..., I think.

I am sure the other responders can tell me if I am fos  or not...
