McGrew Trail Cluster Run

After last year's debacle and the debacle before that one, it seems I have yet to learn my lesson. Here's hoping the third time will be the charm. The trip is back on again. I've selected Saturday and Sunday June 12th and 13th for the run. I feel a whole lot better about these dates as extreme fire danger won't be a concern. This date is also evenly spaced between the cruise in and the bee. Unfortunately it does conflict with one of the mud drag events:icon_crying:...sorry drag queens! This deal was discussed in great detail last year (see thread below). Contrary to what I posted last year, class II ohv's are not required to have a valid 2 year ohv permit displayed on the vehicle to run this trail as it is technically a "system road", however the nice gummint rep I spoke with encourages all ohv'ers to have one whether required or not as it is a donation to a "worthy cause". Whatever that tidbit is worth to you. At any rate, if after meandering thru the lengthy thread below, you have a question that isn't answered, or if'n yer jes feelin' froggy...go ahead an' hop. I have been in regular contact with the club events coordinator regarding this event, and I imagine we'll see it posted to the club calender in due time.

Mayhaps not, but I think you and Mike are missing out on a golden marketing opportunity. You guys could be on a gravy train with biscuit wheels. Why not mock up some publicity photos?...or maybe I will:cornut:

Hey treve-

the mcgrew trail run in now on the club calender and was announced at last nights IHSTO meeting. Now it is up to you to provide the good weather and the no dust trail?

Thank you sir! Excellent work. Here's what must happen in order to satisfy both of those requests. Pleasant sunny weather the weekend of the run preceded by a significant rain event several days before. I'll see what I can do. In the absence of that, hooty has an onboard dust abatement system which I can engage for the comfort of the procession. I just have to stop every ten minutes or so and ad another quart of magic fluid to the acme model 392 dust abator.

Big girl's got her ears on and a seatcover to boot! Can't wait to see the wonder of mother nature after a biscuit burn cambo

Yay cambo! Even though I knew you and bg were in, someone had to break the ice. Now let the cavalcade of responses rain down.

How do I get info on this run. I am definitely very interested. Where is it? What's the trail like? Etc.... We are 3 weeks away and want to get planning =)

thanks!

Yeah jon, those re-links mayben posted contain hyper-links to websites with mcgrew trail info. In a nutshell, you'd be headed west out of grants pass to a small town called o'brien. Pretty long poke for any of you northern folk, but we'd be glad to have you if you did decide to come. The trail is rough and rocky, but not extreme for the most part. There are however a couple optional obstacles which are pretty challenging. Overnight camping is primitive. You'll want to bring plenty of food, water, camping stuff, tools, and any spare parts that fit. Iirc you have the nice looking 1980 sii, is that right? This trail has the potential to gnaw on sheet metal a bit, but the chance of it happening is small with proper wheel placement. I'm the ram-rod on this deal. My co-ram dropped out recently due to transmission failure in his Scout. So far we only have a couple/few local rigs committed to going. Kind of weak-sauce responce so far, which is hard to fathom with the low gas prices.:incazzato:

Sounds great. I really want to go. Its my bday weekend too so it seems like a fun way to spend it. Just a matter of working out the logistics of getting down to grants pass from portland. May just tow it. Maybe someone can tell me.... I have lockers on both ends of my Scout. Can I tow it with a dolly or do I need a full flat bed??? Will it be an all IH trip?? Its was really fun runnin with a bunch of old scouts and people who love them. I used to run with a "club" of all kinds of trucks. People dont care about helping eachother in the way we Scout people do. Makes for a really fun friendly trip and not so red-neck competitive. If you know what I mean.... My truck to totally ready for trail hammering. I have a fresh can of rustoleum in case I need to do any body work on the trail. =)

Jon, you will have a blast with trevor and the fwb crew. They will take good care of anyone with them.
I would use a flatbed to tow. You could use a dolly but I would pull the rear driveline if you go that route just to be safe.

Well that's us to a tee jon! Weeez fer dam shore redneks, but we ain't in tuh trashin' shit just fer the sake of trashin'. We like to run trails, see the sites and spend time with other folks who are into binders. This run is all IH for now. I'm not a complete binder snob though. I'd make exceptions for the right non-binder folk.

For a long tow trip, a trailer will always have better manners than a tow dolly. But, you certainly could dolly it with the front end on the dolly and the rear driveline disco'd.

**edit**good 'ol chester! Great minds think alike!:ihih:

Sounds great. My co-pilot it all over it. I will see what I can get for towing and how much it costs. I always just drive the Scout anywhere, but it seems like it would be less risky to tow. The beast hates the freeway. I have a f250 v10 so really the fuel cost to get there is a wash =) I will keep everyone here posted but put me down as a very strong maybe. The sun better be out by then. This is getting ridiculous

How much do you think a Scout II on 33's weighs?? Under 5k probably right?? I am thinkning 4500ish????? My rental place does a tandem axle flat, 5k max weight for $60 a day. Dollys are $47. Definitely worth the extra $13

I'd say that's pretty f'n close. Great price for the trailer too! Beats sru-hawl all to hell! Hooty Scout ran across the scales about 6 weeks ago at @ 4400 lbs. Including my considerable bulk @ 230. I had a soft top on then. Metal top prolly goes about 2 fitty. Hooty's got 33's a winch and a 392 under the bonnet.

We must put an end to this insidious global warming immediately!!!

Jon...or anybody else...one week out. Whadda ya say? Yay or nay. I need to firm up the count. Looking like just two local rigs so far. Oh well, we're running it anyway before the omniscient ones lock it down for good.:incazzato:

The silence from the north is deafening trever...looks like it'll just be the fwb's at the kalmiopsis klambake. More lettuce cups and backstrap for us!
