345 vs 392IC

One more thing. The intake bolts are different lengths based on the thickness of the casting around each given bolt hole. Thick holes get the longer bolts and thin holes get the short ones, so keep your bolts somewhat orgeenyzd so that you don't get square pegs going into round holes if you know what I mean.
 
Yes I do, I got a few of them off. Didnt come witht he right sockets/box. Got a few off, got carb off, carb adapter plate offthermostat housing off. I do have a few question on parts. Pics coming now.

For the carb is that a spread or squarebore?? And rest of parts what are they??? Sorry I didnt label them when I was taking them, I tried to get good pictures

Pic 1 is an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve. Its an emissions device.

Pic 2 shows a heater hose fitting with a bunged up hose barb. You can get a new one at a hardware store. Take the old one with you for easy comparison.

Pic 3 shows the temp gauge sender. The wire hanging loose just to the side of it attaches to the exposed stud.

Pic 4 is an aftermarket 4bbl carb adapter/spacer.

Pic 5 shows a spreadbore intake identified by the small primary and large secondary bores.
 
Can I rip out the EGR and "forget" to install it? Or do I need somthing to plug the hole?
I guess I should also ask, I do have a 345 under the hood right????

You need to install a block off plate if you choose to delete the valve. With the 4bbl intake it has to be either a 345 or 392. Most likely a 345.
 
Ah ok, any way to tell for SURE it is a 345 or a 392??? I am at the truck today, going to try and finish ripping the intake off.
 
Best way is the ID pad machined into the block on a surface near the fuel pump. It will probably be greased and slimed over so some scraping and brushing followed by good lighting and maybe a closeup snapped on your cell cam should reveal the stamped in numbers. Another identifier of the Improved Cooling 392 ('72 and later) is to see where the metal coolant tubes enter the front of the engine. If they go into the engine block, its a 392 IC. The tubes go into the cylinder heads on the other engines.
 
Few more update pics. Water pipes are leading to block, will try and get to casting info by fuel pump

Or pull valve cover and post up the head #. Also look under neath at the edge of head & exhaust manifold, also will be a # there, or even could be stamped V392.

It's on the block, right side, under the #2 exhaust outlet.

Her is my intake after it got cleaned up. Looks pretty good to me, and it looks like EGR was already plugged

ok guys i must be a speical form of stupid (ha ha ha) well i got the 392( i think) intake all cleaned up, painted and ready to drop onto the motor. Well i ran into a semi major issue, the block that has the water temp sending unit. wel its too large to fit into the new intake. enclosed is pic. maybe you can tell me were i can get the corect peice, or tell me were it needs to go??????

hope yall can help. i will get more pics if needed. i had more taken, but i forgot to hit "submit" here and lost them, :(

That isn't where that thing goes. Where you're trying to thread it is where the other hold down bolt for the t-stat housing goes. The threads are completely different. One is SAE and the other is NPT. That's like oil and water. Besides, you don't want to re-use that rusted out hose fitting anyway. I'd remove the temp sender and chuck the rest in the junk pile.
 
i know its rusted all to hell. but that niple is were the water hose from the waer pump goes, so what do i do wht that hose?? comes from top of pump.
i will be getting more pics as soon as i can. truck is at MIL place. thanks for the help. also i cant get the old sending unit out.

I went back and looked at some of your earlier pics. It looks like I may have been wrong in my previous post about that hole being one of your hold down holes. Still, I'd take that piece into a plumbing store to see if I couldn't find a suitable replacement. The hose fitting is 5/8ths of an inch. So you're saying the hole that you're trying to thread it into is physically too small to for it to thread in?
 
correct. the original block is way to big to fit in the hole. i tried to remove the temp sender and its is not budging. will prob need a new one. is this a special part? or can i pick it up from auto zone,napa, checker, oriely,etc???
 
That fitting was only used on 1980 Scout engines. I would ditch it and just run it like 1979 and earlier which used a thermostat housing and bypass hose.
 
I have found and bought the lower bypass housing. We're does the large elbow hose go to? I should have the part by sat. And hopefully at truck wed to install it.
 
Ok. I got the part. Set it on the intake, now I have to change the cover to the water pump. Anything I need to know before I tear my front end apart? Do I need anything to pull the pulleys off?
