1971 Scout II - Update/Modernization Build

This thread will be the long term update and modernization build of my brothers 1971 Scout II.

As it stands:
1971 Scout II
345 - fresh rebuild due to cam bearing failure.
727 auto - slipping and dieing
d20
2" spring lift
32" BFG at's
roll bar
stock everything

my lil' brother made a list of things he wanted and gave me a 'soft' cap on the money I can spend on it.

The basic list:
make it run - it has a manifold leak or something
rewire it - ez harness
d44 front end - with discs
rear discs
power steering w/ tilt column
power brakes - maybe hydroboost
new dash with gauges that work
stereo that works
clean up the body
clean up the interior
maybe a rollcage upgrade


I hauled it home on oct. 26th. So we can use that date as the 'start' --- I hope it doesn't take as long as other peoples builds :gringrin:

It is a really nice, stockish Scout II. My brother likes it and want tot be able top drive it more - so that is the goal - make it a safe and reliable driver.

Hopefully I will be able to find a black dash pad and swap everything over/repaint everything black with a swingin' IHOnly stainless dash panel.

It has the full msd setup on it... It will probably stay with a Ford duraspark module in the dizzy to send the signal.

Progress:

so I have been collecting parts for a long time for this build. I started today with the power steering conversion.

I had dan (binderbound) rebuild a power steering box and port it for ram assist just in case it ever becomes neccesary.

I tore off the old stuff:

I only ran into a few problems - the stock non-power pitman arm didn't fit the new power steering box. Neither did the box bolts (too short). And I am missing a few parts...

I just ordered up a borgeson joint from Jeff (www.IHPartsAmerica.com :gringrin: ) and will be getting a tilt column locally. Maybe toss on a straight steer and add the factory steering 'stabilizer' bar back to it. With the caster I am going to build into the cut and turn this truck should drive like a dream at 75 on the California freeway. Nice!

I found one in my parts pile -- but not before I had put out an apb to dan to bring me the one I had sent him with the box he rebuilt... So guess who showed up at my house with a pitman arm today? Yep (sorry dan -- I should have called off the apb after I found my 'spare') --- now I have another extra one for the next time I do this... :d
 
My stainless dash is on the way from ihonlynorth!

And I just ordered up an ez wiring harness to ditch all the factory wiring...

Now I just need some time.

Jeff suggested I look at isspro gauges? Anyone run them? I have been an autometer or ultra cheap parts store guy up 'til now. Anyone?
 
Heres one dash I just recently put together with isspro gauges. Dash panel and borgeson are on the way along with an isspro catalog.

Chris...I put some major eyeballz on the isspro gauge line up in stock down at ihon. Very nice stuff and they are sourced outta oreegone!!!

Best thang? The isspro fuel gauge can use the IH-pattern sending unit...the "10>78" resistance value! So the sending unit is a no-brainer!

Isspro is an oregon company and I do like their gauges, top quality parts. However, I believe the last set Dad got were made in india. So, sourced in oregon would be the best way to put it! ;d

Hey chris - why did you choose the ez wiring kit over our kwikwire kits? Was it price, quality, or both? Just curious to see if I need to improve on our wiring kits as I read a lot of IH guys have been buying an ez kit.

The ones I have here are made in india as well. I have to say I was a touch disappointed to find this out but regardless they did look like quality pieces.

I have used them in the past and I 'hope' they are going to be hooking me up on the price on this kit.
And to be honest I didn't even think to look at what you had to offer :blush:.
 
Yes, carl is right, the isspros were made in india. I am running a pyro and boost gauge on my ctd and they work just fine. I, too, was disappointed but it's getting hard to find stuff made here nowadays.

Speaking of gauges, I need to source some for linda's 80, since it's time for me to rebuild the dash. The Scout is waiting in line at ihcs for a paint job. I plan to reuse the original 80 dash.

Isspro has tons of different items and products they market including instrumentation that is made in the u.s. But most folks won't spend that kind of cash for the high-end stuff. I personally have no problem in using stuff from anywhere as long as it works and has a minimal degree of quality. And much of the isspro stuff is certified for use in the hd truck market which they dominate as instrumentation suppliers:

And no matter where in the world portions of their products are sourced, they are still an oregon-base operation:

I don't want my comments misconstrued. I think isspro is a great oregon company and have no problems supporting them. They make top quality instruments and back them up with good service. Dad's gauges were a gift and when I called them they sent me to a great dealer with the best price. I just didn't want people to think they were getting an oregon made product. I would recommend isspro to anyone!

I think auto-meter sells a gauge cluster set that fits into the stock dash holes, or close to it. Its really similar to the original gauge set look too. Pretty pricey though, iirc I think summit had the best price on them.
 
Just trailered home a couple new axles and refreshed tranny! Thanks to Mike mayben and Matt g.!!! All went as planned.

I hope to have the transmission stuffed into the Scout asap.
