1971 Scout II - Update/Modernization Build

I could not find the real "peel & seal" brand, so I used the non foil covered home depot 100% butyl rubber stuff. It seems to work great for sound absorbtion and resonance elimination.

I'm taking it back on oct. 16th. I have other commitments all the other weekends in October. I really did want to go to the rallye - maybe next year :rolleyes5:

Yep, next year's fall rallye will fall right about when your child is 10 months old. The only one who can make plans for that is your child ;)

love what you are doing with this Scout chris. I am taking notes and thinking ahead to both the Travelall and the 65 Scout. I am looking forward to December! I need to hook up with you to pay you for the 44/30 combo.

Nice work. Looking good. And thanks for posting. Inspired me to re-wire my 74 sii a month ago. I had a new fuse box/wire harness laying around. And thanks for your posting of the license plate wiring I knew what to look for when I got to that point. I would have thought the same as you regarding hot n ground on the 2 wires. Wierd, just wierd. I almost decided to replace those 2 wires with just one wire. But I was getten tired of doing the wiring. Not exactly my favorite work.

Here's a couple shots of the gauge panel I fabed up during my re-wiring. Also. Wired the panel with a quick disconnect pigtail. The first pic wasnt completely finished when I took the pic.

Again, thanks

Got a little more done on the ol' boy.

Got the headliner installed. I used a 4'x8' sheet of 1/8" pressboard "wall paneling" from home depot. I think it was $22 or so.

I trimmed off 11" and screwed it to the cross ribs and reinstalled the side panels. Looks pretty good if you ask me.

I also replumbed the auto tranny cooler back into the radiator then into the the aux cooler. Wired in the stereo speakers and played some tunes. Started to clean up the interior, boy was it dirty after not being used for at least the last year....

Put in a few more hours. It seems like every little project takes one full hour...

Installed a new radio antenna -- the old one had a break in the actual wire and you'd get no radio.

Got the speedometer cable replaced. Pulled out the old speedo-cable- vacuum-thingy.

Worked on the timing and idle speed. I need to just let it run for an hour and get it good and hot -- and then monkey with it.

With the new carb, timing set at 7 degrees and idle at 700 it fires right up -- way better than the couple minutes of cranking and hoping you didn't flood it approach that you needed when I got it.

Been working on it every free moment.... Latest updates.

New (to the truck) mc and booster.
New (to the truck) ps box.

Drained all the gas in the tank.

10 fresh gallons in to the tank.

Changed the oil and filter.

New cap and rotor. New coil.

Started checking compression and cleaning re-gaping the plugs.

Much more to do and not a lot of time.... :icon_cry:

Chris, my schedule is tight, like yours, but if you need a few more hands maybe I can get over there in the later evening, like around 8:00 pm.

I finished everything I planned to finish. It will be loaded on the trailer Thursday night and will head south Friday morning. I even waxed it :yikes:

here are the final pics:

Nice finished product chris! Your hard work has definitely paid off! Your brother is going to have a nice Scout.

this thread will be the long term update and modernization build of my brothers 1971 Scout II.

****
my lil' brother made a list of things he wanted and gave me a 'soft' cap on the money I can spend on it.

The basic list:
make it run - it has a manifold leak or something
rewire it - ez harness
d44 front end - with discs
rear discs
power steering w/ tilt column
power brakes - maybe hydroboost
new dash with gauges that work
stereo that works
clean up the body
clean up the interior
maybe a rollcage upgrade

I hauled it home on oct. 26th. So we can use that date as the 'start' --- I hope it doesn't take as long as other peoples builds

In looking at my list I didn't:
get a tilt column (I didn't want to hassle with making the original key work in a new column)
go to hydroboost (but did go to a larger booster and mc)
do any rollcage work (I suck at bending/dan moved/ and I ran out of time)

but that is about it! And I will be taking it back on oct. 16th -- almost 1 year later. Not bad for unpaid help... So I'd say I successfully meet his goals.

I just got back from driving it to sherwood to take amber out to dinner as our celebration. If I am willing to risk my pregnant wife riding in it, in the rain and dark, I must really think it is done!

Great job, chris! I think we all wish we had a brother like you. I know I'd be in the line in front of your garage.

Tell your brother we would all like to see him and his Scout at the bee.

Lyle
