Hi my name is enrique jimenez im from chicago illinois and I currently bought a 1979 Scout 2 and I found the forums though google when I was trying to get ideas on what carb I wanted for my Scout. I apologize before hand for my uneducated question and I do really appreciate everyones feed back on my posts and their personal opinions scout 2.jpg

Hey sorry I havent done this either but im jason a fireman in san francisco bay area and baught my first Scout a 1969 800a 266 v8 4 spd manual outta vegas end of January this year and found the forum in search of parts and anyone who was close that had knowledge and was willing to learn me a few things. Boy did I luck out finding "scooter" from the forums here! Ive had my Scout at his "man cave" ever since I got it here and have been feverishly ordering parts from Chad here at IH parts and with parts of quality coming in 1day tops due to there location somewhat near where I live I am blessed for sure by the Scout gods! Great hard working quality company!

My vision for the Scout is a daily driver and I purchased it with rust free new paint solid tub 97% original with a po part here and there but overall great condition!

Scooter has shown me anything and everything ive ever wanted to know from the simplest of things like fluid changes (new to me as the scouts are) to eventually changing oil pan gaskets, valley pan gaskets, valve cover gaskets, thermostat/gasket, all new hoses, fuel lines/filters, heater hoses, new belt, front rear diff oil changes, welch plug change on manifold, new temp sender, and realized the carb was shot and it only gave me the balls to do what I originally planned to really make it a reliable daily driver Scout...... And that is a new TBI kit from bill hamilton coming this week! Thank you to all the knowledgeable guys and gals on this forum for your help now and in the future.

Welcome folks.

Jason, if you can fit it in time-wise you might consider making it down to our next babs club meeting April 8th at 7 p.m. At the fifty's diner in fremont. Doc and jim should be letting us know about how the death valley trip went. We'll also cover the recent winter nationals we held a few weeks back in hollister.

Hey dkminors thanks for the invite ill have to check my schedule to see if I can make down the 680 freeway or the 880 that late in the evening from where I am in the benicia/vallejo area.

Welcome to all.

Hey jason
it's been a pleasure helping you out with your sweet little ride. Glad I have been available to help. Has been a great start to a good friendship. Looking forward to helping out in setting up the TBI when it comes in. A good start to a build thread, maybe. I May have forgot to mention the monthly babs meeting. If it wasn't for my work schedule I would actually show up.

Hi all! May name is simpson from baguio city, philippines. I just signed in as a member but I have been lurking here through binder planet. I have 4 horses in my stable (all Scout iis) it's tough building projects here when parts are scarce. I guess I'll be posting here also for ihparts to see the need on the other side of the planet. Thanks

Here are the horses, all diesels! :yesnod:

Wow red is an extended cab. I've never seen one of those before, but IH did some interesting things. What diesels are in those puppies???

Thanks chappie! The green has a mitsubishi fuso 4d32 (3.5 liters) diesel, the red has a toyota b (2.9) diesel and the white has a mitsubishi fuso 4d30 (3.3 liters) diesel. Yes, they are a little loud and rattly. :d

Howdy everyone. Just picked up a clean title Scout 80/800 model clean title major project. Came across the site looking for what parts are out there. I'm located in pa.

Vehicle has what appears to be a Scout specific plow on it too which is kind of cool, but unfortunately it is not removable (like quick remove) so I'm going to end up dumping that to fund some other parts. Anyone know what a hydraulic plow sells for one of these? It has everything although the cylinder will probably need replaced or rebuilt. It's function is interesting, it has this block mounted to the power steering pump and a lever in the cab that controlled a hydraulic rocker switch block that was on the ps pump. Nifty system for the age.

The Scout I got was owned by a garage/junkyard that used it as a plow vehicle until the late 90's and he said it last ran about 6-9 years ago in the yard. Looks like it'll run pretty easy, tons of surface rust and damage but almost no rot other than the rockers. Hood is salvageable and all running gear and floor pans. Going to just go the route of fiberglass fenders and tailgate corners, might bang out the quarter panels or just go fiber, we'll see.

Hey everyone, recently became the owner of the family Scout. A '77 SSII. Glad to find a friendly forum with guys willing to offer advice. I was abruptly referred here from some not as friendly folks on the pirate4x4 forum.

Your kind is not welcome around these parts, you blankety-blank so and so....just kidding! Glad to have you here. Sorry for the butt pirate flashback. I just couldn't help myself.

First time...been checking it out a couple weeks. I own a 69 / 800 have had jeeps, blazers, and trucks think I like the Scout the best. Bought it about 10 years ago, drove it for first 5, been sitting last 5. I'm second owner found it in barn in northern az 90k miles and not one bit of rust. Couple months ago decided to get it back in service. Anyway doing some mods to it and thought I would like to know what other Scout owners thought. If anyone interested I could post more pics. Just wanting what you guys think.

Hey everyone, mahoney here from slc, ut. Been a member about a week so far. Thanks in advance for all the great resources and help on the forum.

In the past week I've picked up two scouts iis. A '73 with 345, 2 bbl, 4 spd manual, d30 front, d44 rear. And a '78 with 304, 4 spd manual, d44 front and rear. Between the two I should be able to get a pretty good rig together. The '73 has been sitting for 8 years and the '78 for 12 years. Both were supposedly running when parked.

Gonna be a project....

Maybe I'll start a build post to journal/document the build.

Hi! Jon champion here.
Been a member for a while but I finally have the time and money to work on my 75' Scout II. I would like to post a new thread but I do not have the "new thread" button.

Hi jon. This is a stickied thread. If you'd like to start a build thread, you should be able to do so in the reader's rides section. Or if you have an issue you need some advice about, simply post a thread in the most appropriate section ie carb tech for fuel delivery issues for example. Let us know in this thread if you still don't have the ability to post a new thread. I don't see why that would be the case though.

Hi all.

New member and wanted to say thanks for all of the great information here. I was able to get most of my questions answered using the magic search feature before joining.

I am an auto "hobbyist" with too many projects and generally not enough time. For me, the best part about working on old cars is the actual work.

I ended up with my 76 traveler because I was thinking about what to do for our second family ride. We have a newer Chevy crew cab truck as our primary driver. I had been driving a 96 4runner and we simply outgrew it. (the wife gets the newer ride as a rule) we live at the foot of the mountains in montana and 4 wheel drive with decent clearance is a must. Piling the wife and I, plus two kids, dogs, and gear became an impossible task in the toyota.

My first requirement in a vehicle is that it has to be stone cold reliable. You can get there by building it or buying it. In my neck of the woods, a full sized 4wd vehicle is $20k for anything less than 100k miles and you end up with what everyone else is driving.

I came into the Scout knowing I was going to throw some (ok, a lot) of time and money at it.

Familiar story, it had been sitting for almost 10 years. I got it running to assess the drivetrain. The 345 sounds great, and nothing in the drivetrain made any oh **** noises. It is in the garage now and getting the work over. I think the po stopped driving it due to carb issues from what I could tell. They had had it for something like 20 years before that and I think they parked it one day after it wouldn't start in the montana cold and never got back to it. It was pretty unmolested. In fact, this May be one of the few cars this old that I have ever dug into where the only wiring hacks were for a trailer pigtail. Absolutely stock under the hood.

New 2300 w/electric choke. New throttle and kickdown cables. Kwikwire 14 and gauge kit. Dui. All the usual gaskets. Fuel tank was too furry with rust for a boil out so I have a new poly tank and sending unit on its way. New body bushings.

Had some rust in the bed so I cut it out and I'm fabbing up the replacement now. There is a bit of rot above the rear wheel arches that I'll deal with. That's about it for rust, amazingly enough. No problems anywhere else except for some surface scaling under the carpet in the front. I May have a few small patches to weld in but nothing more than an afternoon's worth of work.

By the time everything above is wrapped up, I'll move to suspension and brakes. And finally paint. Last step will be the soft top and cage. I'll need the cage to mount modern 3 point seat belts. This is another must have item.

At the end of the process, I'll have a nice reliable ride that will see 75% of its' time on two lane roads, a lot of gravel county roads, and hauling a boat. The other 25% will be forest service and blm roads. This will actually be used as a sport utility vehicle. Hunting, fishing, camping, skiing. Etc. No big lifts, no crawling. I will likely go with a 2.5" lift but nothing more.

Whew...long intro. Once I pull some pictures together in the next week or two, I'll start a build thread.

Thanks again ya'll. Glad to be here.
