Universal Joint

I am trying to remove and replace the rear universal joint on the front drive shaft of my 1970 800A V8 with automatic transmission. The front u-joint is of course a standard procedure - the rear u- joint however is tucked in above the transmission cross member and in / around the exhaust pipe, transfer case, etc.. I hope this doesn’t require disconnecting and sliding the transmission back towards the rear of the vehicle. Other than cutting a hole in floor and transmission tunnel and patching back in (?) I’m at a loss. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You won't be able to get a wrench on all four nuts in one shot. What you'll need to do is rotate the shaft so you have wrench access to one or two nuts, then put the case back into gear with the lockout hubs locked to hold resistance against your wrench torque. Remove those nuts, then t-case back into neutral so you can rotate the shaft to wrench access the other nut(s,) then put the case back into gear. It's a bit tedious, bet plenty doable without lifting the body clean off the frame or anything approaching that level of extremity.
