This Is Where I Ask Dumb Questions ('74 SII Rehab)

You shoulda told me about parken my own scouts next to each other. Because they had off spring and now I'm sporten 4 scouts II 's.

Ooops! I let another one slip through the cracks. My bad, homey. We prolly should post a sticky thread in the welcome section to warn newbeez of that horrific phenomenon.

Okay, another bonehead question...I have the 304 out and raedy to pull parts. Are all the brackets and such off it gonna work okay on the 345 without a bunch of voodoo blacksmithing? All that is getting rehung is alternator and power steering. Hoping the mounting points for all this on both blocks are at least in the same time zone:icon_eh:

Jeebus, they don't make it easy:icon_neutral:so, as we've determined, the end result is to get a 345/727 in the semi rust free ft. Wayne product...

I've dug around the interwebz, but have not found a good answer to my query. I have the 727 and a 3spd (t90?) laying on the floor in the garage. There has been comment about matching the bull gears on tooth count and gear angle, but no where anything about swapping the gears so the trans and t-case match:nonod: would seem to be the thing to do, unless the shafts are off. Any thoughts:icon_stressed:

What's the 727 out of? Has it got the adapter housing with the reverse texas pattern to accept a d20? Does it have an output gear on the back of it?
If the answers are: Scout II 4x4, yes and yes, then your d20 that was hooked to the 3spd will mate. The gear pitch angel should match fine. The earlier d20's found in s800's had a different gear pitch.
The starter spacers shims are not unobtanium. Most peeps looking to do a trans swap in a Scout are going the opposite way of you and as such find themselves omitting their spacer shims.

Thanks, trev. You nailed it. Everything I'm swapping in is Scout II stuff. I did find some part #'s in an mm thread, so I'll likely double check them to make sure.

Well, imagine my surprise when I went to get the basically new oil pump that came with my 345, and discovered it is wildly different than the one I took out of the 304! The "new" one is a front sump, I believe from a 392 out of a loadstar. I know I need a rear sump for a Scout, but had no idea the difference. Thought I'd change the pickup out, but not now. Can one of you explain this to me. My old head was convinced the pumps themselves are the same for all sv8's:sosp:

The Scout II with its funky dual sump oil pan requires a unique oil pump. Here's the really out-frikkin' standing news. Even though scouts are the most plentiful binders around these days, there are no, as in zero, zilch, nada new oil pumps available for the sii configuration. So your stuck with the one from your 304. You can rebuild it as kits are available, but that is as good as it will get for you, my grumpy friend.

Not sure about the IH motors, but I have swapped the pick up tubes for the oil pump on several different Ford motors. Mustangs have a single front sump while the trucks and suv's normally come with a dual sump pan. That's for the 5.0 & 5.8 versions that has been used through out thier production.

Might be something to look into doing. If it's possible for the IH motor. Maybe it's time for federal mogul to start making replacement pumps for our rigs.

There ain't no way to swap the pickup tube. That flashed thru my alleged mind between the shelf and the bench. Not no how...

Well, unfortunately it ain't that simple for us kimball. It isn't just a matter of the pickup tube being different. The pump itself differs between the sii v8 and f/s v8 applications. There are still some new f/s v8 pumps available, but no sii v8 pumps. The pumps are IH proprietary design and I believe the tooling for the sii v8 pump done got melted down or otherwise absconded with decades ago. That would first have to be recreated before even one new pump could be offered. That's expensive. You know how it is. Its a numbers game. Federal mogul, melling et all are in it to win it. How many sii v8 pumps you reckon they'd have to sell at top dollar to turn a profit?

Goes to show how often I have had to go through an IH v8 motor. Which says a lot about the reliability of these motors compared to the two most common players and the after market support for them. I totally understand the numbers game for the manufacturers. I have gone through enough cheby and Ford motors to see the cheby parts are always cheaper than the Ford. Based on what sells more. And I'm not much a fan of cheby, even though I have owned a few in the past.

I mainly mentioned about federal mogul (along with others who manufacture auto parts) only on wishful thinking. I actually wouldn't expect something like the oil pump for the Scout II motor to be produced new in my life time. Due to the supply and demand. Not too often we need to replace the oil pumps in these long lasting high milage motors. Unlike the the fordo'lette's

I have worked in the manufacturing side long enough(over 19 years) to know that it's mega bucks to make just one part. Not cost effective to just make one or two parts alone. It's a few step process, depending on the part, before it actually gets to actually making the part. And I don't wanna highjack the thread on that topic.

To continue the oil related theme here, I need to bounce one off you kids. I have an almost new, based on it's pristine looks, front sump pump. The s II pump ain't so pretty. Someone ran the 304 hot more than once, given the shrapnel I found in the pan, and the pump looks burnt. Now, is it in the realm of reality to put he innards of the clean pump in the Scout pump, and swap the pickup tubes?

I'm not going to say definitively one way or the other, because I just don't know for sure. The ramblin' gamblin' man in me says no dice. This is one case where I'd be delighted to be proved wrong.

$250 for a rebuild oil pump:mad2:low volume, high price...

Anybody have a clue how much slack the pump gears should have?

Got it cleaned up, and the pump gears look nice and smooth. Can't see any wear on them. Maybe I'll invoke the blessings of my irish ancestors and go with this one:lol:

The irish in me says "cleaning the old one up" might be worth it. Ouch!!!! On the two and a half franklins on a rebuild. I could possible tolerate that for a bran spaken new one - but yea right I'm just dreamen over here under a boulder or two called scouts
