T28 (BW model 8) stall in drive or reverse

Hello,

I'm trying to understand what's wrong with the transmission in my 1100c Travelall. If I set the idle normally, when I shift into drive or reverse, it jerks forward and stalls. I can raise the idle to around 1500 and it will stay running but act as though it's under a lot of load.

It almost feels like the torque converter is locking up at a very low rpm? I tried screwing the vacuum control unit out to reduce control pressure, not sure that worked honestly. Going to try to do fluid change, it's tight under there near that cross member.

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this? I'm new to Travelalls.

Thanks!

Dylan

How's the engine tune condition on this vehicle? Do you have a vacuum gauge that you could connect to a manifold vacuum source for readings that could either indicate or rule out a vacuum leak?

Good vacuum pressure at idle, or at high idle, when in park or neutral. Just had carb rebuild and a lot of vacuum tubing replaced, and vacuum brake booster replaced. Vacuum drops below 10 at idle in Drive or Reverse but engine RPM is also very low. Just feels like it's under heavy load when in gear.

Quick update. Figured out that vacuum gauge dropped below 10 in gear. Vacuum modulator diaphragm is leaking vacuum badly. It was a real escapade to find one to order, finally found Rambler parts sites. I also ordered a transmission rebuild kit.

The other clue is it seemed like the ATF level was too high. Maybe it's not flowing fluid all the way through.

I guess I'm also looking for a 727 as a backup plan.

When I initially checked level the truck had been sitting. Used the trans dipstick from engine compartment. When I pulled the vacuum modulator off later I noticed that it seemed like an awful lot of trans fluid in the sump (took off a few quarts above the line of the vacuum modulator hole).

I ordered a new filter and pan gasket. Hoping to find something like a clogged pickup or bad pump.

Great news! 90% vacuum leak in the modulator, 10% previous owner overfilling transmission with ATF. Shifts wonderfully now and doesn't stall. Now on to new tires, suspension bushings, then bodywork and paint... And hopefully power steering. Gosh it's hard to steer without power steering.
