STARTING A 1979 196(IC) THAT HASN'T RAN SINCE 2002.

SOILSCOUT

If this question has already been answered, I apologize as I could not find the thread. I recently bought a 1979 Scout II with a 196(ic). The Scout is all original with a 3 speed manual. It has the typical rusted out body of a Scout that has sat in a field for many years. Although challenging, it is possible to revive it.

I am mechanically inclined and used to work on diesel engines and trucks for a short time when I was younger. I have never restored a vehicle in my life and think this Scout will be the opportunity to do so.

What recommendations, suggestions, advice, knowledge, tricks, and hacks can anyone share with me when attempting to start the engine for the first time after sitting for 22 years? If anyone has a basic step by step process, that would be great. Thanks in advance for any help given!

If I am successful at restoring this Scout mostly by myself, I will most likely do it again.

Search under Michael Mayben. Once a long while ago he was one of our main tech moderators and had posted a procedure for starting up an engine that has sat for a long period of time. I briefly looked for the post but couldn't find it. Maybe @Scoutboy74 or @Robert Kenney knows where that old document is stored at.

If you click on the Ol' Mayben stickied thread 3 threads down from the top raht cheer...(gotta have a litte Mayben Texas drawl) raht cheer in this Gas Engine section titled 'I-4 and SV Engine Non-Oiling Rocker Assy" and then if you scroll down to the 3rd post in that thread, you'll find the PDF file in question.
