Starter will not stop turning

I have a 76 Scout II with at 345 and a gold box system. Tried to get it to start today after installing a rebuilt carb and after cranking the ignition for several seconds I would turn the key off but the starter would continue to turn for another 4 to 5 seconds. Then on my last attempt the starter would not stop even after I turned the ignition off and pulled the key out. I had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop. When I tried to reconnect the battery it would immediately start cranking again. Does this sound more like a bad ignition switch or a bad solenoid on the starter?
Thanks

Solenoid. Easy way to be sure is to disco the 16ga wire connected to your solenoid 's' terminal. That's the trigger wire from your ignition switch. If the starter still wants to crank with that wire off, you know for sure its a solenoid problem. The plunger May just be stuck, or the spring broken.

Hi, this happened to me. Of coarse, I tried all those things which make sense to no avail.

The parts store had given me a starter whose drive-end was a quarter inch too long. It could not physically let go.

If it's the original starter it's probably either a low battery and worn nose bushing (which causes excessive amp draw which spot welds the contacts in the solenoid) or the solenoid is shot/sticky, etc. A gentle tap on the solenoid on the non-breakable part May pop it loose.

I have about a 1/4 in spacer on my new starter or it does the same thing. I had removed the spacer cause the old starter wasn't quite catching enough and gave it to ihrunner in a box of "throw away" stuff. He was smart enough to hang on to it and gave it back to me when I told him the old starter completely stopped engaging and now the new one won't let go. Lol the spacer fixed the problem immediately on my 345.

Scoutboy....thanks for the clarification. Sometimes we greenhorns fumble into a correct decision by accident. I keep waiting for the post that says "oh crap.....tell me u didn't!" lol thanks again.
