Slick Rock Run (Nov 14-15 or 21-22)

Great that you can make it Craig. I'm thinking of leaving Friday around 12:00 or so. Plan was to go 16 to 49 to 4, and meet up with the bay area group in angels camp. I've heard there are a few decent places to camp near the trailhead for Friday night. Plan was to take it easy Friday, maybe some fishing or just hanging out, then hit the trails in the morning, then camp on the strawberry trail Saturday. Let me know if that works for you.

Other than gas in dorrington, is there anyplace to get gas in between trails on 88?

Good negotiating skills Craig.

There is a camp sight about a mile in on the trail called silver creek. I've passed it before and have seen others camped there. Looks like an awesome spot to spend the night.

Post up if you have a working cb radio in your Scout.

I have to work Friday, so I will head out after work. This means it will be dark when I arrive. Having to find camp in the dark is an adventure made easy with a good radio. It you have a 2m or 70cm radio all the better.

Using google maps I see the road to the trail head off of hwy 4 is not marked. But just before you get there you will pass some "green" gates use to close hwy 4 in the winter time. The road narrows and the double yellow lines end at the gates. From there is not much farther as its the next right turn.

If your camping at silver creek (pic above), the best way to get there is to enter from the lake alpine campsite side.
It's about 10-15 minutes of easy wheeling.

There is also a decent campsite (but not nearly as scenic) on the other end about 5 minutes into the trail portion. It's just after you cross a wooden bridge.

A third option would be to camp along utica reservoir the first night. (5 minutes to the trailhead).

Craig I will have the cb on channel 10, are you flying solo or with one of your kids? If billy is coming, avery wants to come. Sean, I like the silver creek idea. Hows the fishing there? I probably will be in angels camp around 2:00 Friday, let me know if that works for you.

What's the fire restriction situation, couldn't find anything other than eldorado's fire restrictions which have been lifted. Should we assume this is consistent across the board? I have a fire permit.

Mike what's the closest gas to the trailhead? My Scout likes to consume, with a 19 gallon tank and 5 onboard gallons I need to strategies

I'd fill up in murphys, which is about an hour out.
There are two gas stations right on the highway there, the first one on the left is usually cheaper.

You can top off at any of the stations below:
there are 3 in arnold, but it will be 10-15 cents more per gallon.
All above usually close around 10pm ish.

The last gas is in dorrington/camp connell. Which is 30-45 minutes from the trailheads.
It will be much more (general store type, vs a full gas station).
It usually closes a bit earlier 8-9pm if your lucky (unpredictable).

Solo? Good question. Billy is out, but will see if my brother or neighbor wants to ride shot gun.

Craig...you are in! That is fantastic!

I don't know what time I am leaving yet as there are a few local folks trying to get out early on Friday. It May be one of those things where we don't get on the road till later and on Friday that likely means traffic / delays. Then again, I May head out before the late crew as I like day driving much better. I'm happy to meet in arnold, angels camp, or at either end of the trail as long as we all know where to go meeting up should be somewhat trivial (timing could be another story). That said, I'm not too keen on wheeling at night on a trail I am not familiar with.

I will try to get my cb working well enough for emergency use (it has a short – needs replaced). Cell phone is another option until we lose service (anyone know what service is like up there?).

As for food I plan to bring stuff to cook, etc.

I have at&t & it sucks up there. (loses signal in arnold).
It doesn't work at my folks cabin there (2 minutes off the highway).

However, last month when I was there, I was able to get a signal at the staging area on the utica end (middle of nowhere actually).

Verizon has better coverage up through dorrington, but I have no idea about up by lake alpine or utica.

Craig...you are in! That is fantastic!

I wanted to make this trip for sure.

Thanks Mike for letting us know there will be no cell phone coverage.
What will we hit trying to make camp at silver creek camping spot?

I got most everything repaired, waiting on ups for bump stops. I just need to check all the fluids and test drive it tomorrow.

Still wrench en late Wednesday night have a few things to button up to night. So no time to shop yet May have to get food & drinks on the road. Craig please bring your omelet recipe!:icon_rotate: I will either take Friday off or work till 11:00 am, stacy cant miss school so I am shooting for leaving castro valley by 2:00. There is a park & ride at 580 & center we could meet at. Sean hope that works for you? Puts us in angels camp around 4:00 I think ? Stacy & I both have c.b.'s what channel will you be on sac Craig?

[Craig please bring your omelet recipe!:icon_rotate:[/quote]

You will need two eggs per omelet and a quart size freezer Ziploc along with anything else you would like in your omelet. I can provide a pot to boil them all in for the required 13 minutes. I like to put my fixings in the bag, but wait to add the two eggs until I am ready that morning.

I am leaving work at noon tomorrow and plan to get out of hayward by 2pm as well. I am happy to meet you at the park & ride at 580 & center. I'll call you all when I'm heading out or vice versa.

I checked my cb last night and it is completely useless now!:incazzato:

I will have the cb on channel 10

Let use channel 10:icon_wink:

I hear ya on the wrenching into the night. Got the bump stop installed and check most of the fluids and took it for a spin up to the gas station for a fill up. Piled a bunch of stuff by the garage door to load tonight.

Truck is ready to go, just have to load it up. Plan was to leave sac around 12:00 Friday afternoon. Should get me to angels camp somewhere around 2:00. Sean are you still planning to get there around that time, or is 4:00 more realistic? Pm me your cell number so we can figure out the plan. If sean and I get to the campsite before everyone else, will have the cb on channel 10 to give directions.

Have a fun/safe trip guys...

Iirc it's an average 4x4 dirt road to that campsite (slightly modified suv could make it).
