Scout haulin' California road trip. Oct 24-26.

I am headed to California this weekend to pickup my lil' brothers super sweet 1971 Scout II.

headed straight down I-5, to 505, to 80, to 680 - to walnut creek.

Any IH'ers along the route that could provide pit support in case of an emergency?? If so post up, pm or email the details.

And if you see a white dodge pickup towing a red/orange and white Scout II on the side of the road - it's me...

I probably will not have internet access so I will not be updating this thread after about 5am Friday...

I will provide a full report when I return. And will start a new thread documenting the mini rebuild of the Scout.

My brother is in the army and currently stationed in africa - he will be funding the rebuild with his hard earned out of country pay. Nothing major is planned - just a little here, a little there - freshen things up, make it more reliable and safer to drive. Drum brakes at California freeway speeds just don't cut it...

you know where I'm at chris if you need any help.

Thanks. I am writing down your number right now...

I think you will be seeing my Dad asap -- he was supposed to get a transmission cable a while back -- and now we really need to to make loading the Scout a little easier.

Last time he moved the Scout the cable broke and he needed a tow truck to get him squared away in his own driveway...

No problem on the cable as we have plenty of those in stock. Let me know if your Dad can't make it over here as its one day shipping to walnut creek.

Grants pass to the cali border is fat white boy kuntree! We'll most likely be tinkerin' in shop south unless we decide to head up on the hill and putter around for a spell.

I'm in concord/walnut creek. (down treat off of 680).

However I'll be working Friday until 4pm, then off to the mountains (fordyce work party) by 8pm.

If your in a bind I can help you out & push back my leaving time. ;)

if your later than that, keep an eye out for a silver dodge, flat towing my green 80 up 680 & 80.

Nine two 5, 7 six eight, 10 four seven.

Thanks everyone for the contact info -- I hope I don't need to meet you guys :crossing fingers: - I don't mean it that way, I do hope to meet you someday - just not stranded on the side of the road somewhere or in need of a Scout part to get it moving...

Thanks again!

I'm all loaded and ready to roll. Just waiting on the wife to get packed  we are only gonna be gone for 2 days - geez home long can it take...

Good luck.....go in rust my son.......:dita:

I just rolled back into newberg -- trip was totally boring - nothing happened the whole way down and back - what a relief!

1190 miles roundtrip. 18.3 mpg down :smokin: towing just the trailer. 15.3 mpg on the way back... Not bad for about 15,000 pounds rolling along at or above the speed limit. I'd like to thank rudolph diesel and cleesie cummins...

Got the truck loaded up Saturday morning -- it only took us about an hour to fit the shift cable into place. Then we didn't have it adjusted correctly - so park was reverse and so on down the line. Which required a quick bypass of the neutral/saftey switch to get it to start... Loaded it up and loaded up a whole bed of spares, nos stuff that my brother never installed, an extra tranny and t-case a couple bumpers and an extra set of tires and wheels - and even a mac cam bearing install tool kit:d

That's a good looking Scout.

You got any room for it at the chopshop?

It needs some minor body work, but it will then need some major paint work or some fancy matching work.... My brother has money to spend on it though $$$ :d

I can make room.. how soon were you thinking?

it is not an 810 -- I checked the glove box and it is a Scout II -- my '72 has all the same quirks that this 1971 has, vin tag and line setting ticket on the cowl.

Oh well, looks like a nice starting point. Glad you made it back without any troubles!!

looks like a nice Scout. What are the details? Other than paint what else does it need?

I'm gonna start a 'build' thread for it.

As it stands:
1971 Scout II
345 - fresh rebuild due to cam bearing failure.
727 auto - slipping and dieing
d20
2" spring lift
32" BFG at's
roll bar
stock everything

my lil' brother made a list of things he wanted and gave me a 'soft' cap on the money I can spend on it.

The basic list:
make it run - it has a manifold leak or something
rewire it - ez harness
d44 front end - with discs
rear discs
power steering w/ tilt column
power brakes - maybe hydroboost
new dash with gauges that work
stereo that works
clean up the body
clean up the interior
maybe a rollcage upgrade

the goal is to make it run - stop and be safe and clean. Nothing bling, nothing hardcore. He want to daily drive it -- blast around gravel roads - hit the mountains for skiing - basically be the coolest captain with the coolest 4x4 at whatever army base he is staitioned at. Top down, crusing slow, picking up chicks, etc...

Are you still needing a tranny? I have a good one sitting in the garage.

Sounds like alot of fun and you get to do it on someone else's dime. Not that you would spend alot of course.

And I gotta pair of sii axles (disc front) in the shop that need to go away (came inna swap from monte originally). The locko hubs are gone but everything else is there. The brake system on the rear axle is new and fresh, doesn't appear to have actually been used. They are geared 3.07 so they would be cruiser gears for sure. Vintage post-'77 we think as the bom numbers are not in the database.

I'd have to surmise that is a "early" sii, maybe a transition version from the 810 based on the mounting of the data plate. So ya May find "features" of both versions as ya work through it.
