Hi everyone im a new owner of a 1979 Scout II with a 304 v8 and 4' lift can someone help me out on some info? I currently need a new carb I current have a edelbrock 4 barrel 650 that's to big n bogs new a new carb any info or forums I should look at or ask on to get the right one??? And I'm also looking to tow a boat that about 5500-6000lbs anyone have any feed back on towing???
 
I've had that carb on IH motors and it worked pretty good. As far as towing goes when you get that motor worked out and running right IH motors were built for towing. Hook up your 6000lb boat and drive. I tow my tanker of a boat all the time with 7 people in my Travelall and the boat filled with camping stuff for a 3 day weekend over donner summit headed to englebright, shasta, oroville or bullards bar and it tows the whole load no problem. Enjoy the Scout.
 
Thanks boss yea I have heard from ppl that I shouldn't tow cause of my 4" lift but I actually bought the thing to tow it and off roading I appreciate ur reply any recommendations on a carb??
 
A quick note on the 304's. They only had a 2 bbl carburetor from IH thus only a 2 bbl manifold was available. That was until one of the IH parts dealers had a 4 bbl manifold cast in aluminum...
Are 100% sure you have the 304 under the hood? Possible the Scout could have a 345 in 79 which would have the 4bbl.

If you have the edlebrock 4bbl carb you either have this aluminum 4bbl mani, a 345, or a crappy adapter. The 2 to 4 bbl adapters are worthless..

If you would, please post a photo of your carb arrangement. Then I can point you in the correct direction..

I've done a lot of rv and some boat towing with a 4" lifted Scout. Mine's a 345 and there is plenty of power there, the weak areas are the brakes and handling. If your boat trailer has brakes you're good to go there. I've found the torsion bar load leveling hitch makes the handling much better. It depends on the balance of your trailer though.

The other thing that makes a huge difference is proper tire pressure. All this assumes that your suspension is in good shape and that the bushings in the spring eyes are not worn out.

At first look I thought you had the aluminum manifold...then I noticed the cap on the brake reservoir and the water neck look to be the same color so it's probably just painted. The part he needs to see is the base of the carburetor...I think mostly to see if it's an adapter plate which I agree is a worthless set up. The 2 bbl carbs go pretty good on the IH motor. Like I said and I know it's not everyones favorite but sitting on the proper manifold the edelbrock carb works pretty good. I have one on my 392 in my Travelall and get decent mileage and she runs smooth and never stumbles. I had a carter in my travelette before we went cummins, basically same as the edelbrock and I liked it there as well, I just extended the vent in case of a big slosh and it was a wheeling beast. Seems like I've pulled every Jeep in Nevada out of somewhere but maybe there are a few left.
 
Oo yea I'll get more pics for everyone so we can get a better understand of wat I need to get and what not I want tell everyone I appreciate ur feed and I May get a bit annoying but I'm new to this and very interested on hearing everyone's input thanks again guy and stay tune for those pics
 
Kind of hard to tell from those pics, but the last one looks like there May in fact be one of those worthless 4bbl to 2bbl adapters. So, my best suggestion to you is to ebay that edelbog and pop for a Holley list 0-7448, which by coincidence can be purchased from IHPA, the very fine vendor who makes this forum possible. That will be a much better solution for you than what you have on there now.
 
Yep you've got an adapter under that afb.
So......... There is no way you'll ever be happy with that setup.. My recommendation is to find a good used or new Holley 2300. Don't get a 500 cfm version. The stock one is adequate at 275 cfm but if that can't be found in reasonable condition, the 350 cfm 2300 list # 0-7448 that you can buy new.

Ok so you guys are stating that I should just doo 2bb besides of any 4bb correct?? And I was gotta get a brand new 2300 holly or 2150 motorcraft which they were throwing in the adapter but now I kno not to take it!!

Also heard that the 2150 motorcraft was a good choice for towing and off roading. Any feed back guys between 2300 Holley or 2150 motorcraft???

The Ford calibration May be close but the IH being a very different power band wise engine will have considerable jetting differances. If you own it give it a try..

I do not like the 2150 or any of the modular holleys.. The 2300 gives you ease of jetting changes and adjustable fuel level. For off road tuning it is irreplacable.
 
The motorcraft is an excellent carb also. Just like all of them it needs regular maintenance. The one thing I like about the 2150 is that the bowl design will never leak like the 2300. Personally I would get whatever you find the best deal on with an electric choke. Better yet call bill and get a TBI system if you can afford it. Assuming you don't have emissions inspection.

As far as towing your boat the Scout II has a 5000# tow rating. Combine the short wheel base with a 30+ year old vehicle of questionable condition and you're really pushing the envelope.
 
My current carb has an electric choke and I got two for one on 2150 motorcraft and ur saying I'll be find with towing my boat??
 
No, you would be exceeding the tow capacity of the Scout. You May be fine, or a wheel bearing May let go allowing the axle shaft and wheel to exit the vehicle, or one of the crappy spring mount welds May tear off the frame, or some old lady May cut you off and you won't be able to maneuver or brake half as well as you should. Not trying to scare you just point out the reality of your equipment.

Edit: we can give you a list of maintenance to perform and modifications to make towing your boat less risky, but I don't recommend it.
 
Ooo ok thanks yea my boats at about 5100 empty and full with fuel is 5500 lbs yea I still between 2150 motorcraft $280 and 2300 Holley that's $350
 
5500 with fuel and trailer, but nothing else (say food, beer, tools, etc.)?

What about passengers? It all gets added to the gcvwr (google that). It sounds like you would be way over loaded.

Not enough info about the carbs you're looking at to comment.
 
Boat is 4200 and trailer is 900 plus fuel is another 300 then beer and food and tools another 50-100 lbs my Scout only has a passenger and drive seat that's all
