Need carb help!

I just built a 1977 Scout II. Having a lot of trouble with carb overloading, back firing and no power. I know nothing about carbs. I had an old school mechanic/parts store owner look at it to see if he could rebuild. He indicated that it was some type of economic (economaster or econoline maybe???) Holley carb built for gas milage and that I would get no performance out of it and that I would be better offer getting a Holley 500 or a motorcraft as it would bolt right up. Can anyone offer some advise? I have the build done all except the carb...I am a better body man than a mechanic. I have tried to find some identifying numbers on the carb but have failed to do so as I can not take the carb off.....the truck must remain drivable. Any help would greatly be appreciated as I have yet to fully enjoy my new toy! Thanks

Once you read the sticky on carbs, you might try to advance the timing. Read the power timing thread as well.:yesnod:

The mods will likely move this to the carb tech section for more play. The oe carb if 2bbl on a '77 Scout would be a Holley 2210. Posting a well-focused picture for positive id would be helpful. Including a few more specifics about your Scout ie engine size, transmission etc is always a good idea. The more specs we have, the less guessing is required making the help process that much easier.

Wow! Thanks guys for the quick responce.....engine 345/720/Dana 20 with Dana 44's front and rear. Did a spring over, reverse schackle, bilstien 7100/5150, cut & turned, Tom woods cv drive shaft, 2" Skyjacker lift springs, hd tie rod/drag link, new brake buster/master cylinder (vacum assisted) on 34x10.5x15 super swamper ltb's. These are most of the mods I've done. I will read the "sticky" & "power timing" sections and get a picture of the carb posted this weekend....thanks again guys.....wish I would have found out about you guys a long time ago! There are other companies/binders out there that are not as willing to help.
