Mocha Mike's Scout 80

Spring of 09 I rebuilt my propane set up (all new gaskets on the regulator & mixer). I ditched the vacuum lockout in favor of electric ones located at each tank (so I don't have to switch tanks while wheeling).
Installed a new square bore base plate, which I got off ebay (old one was poorly modified). The new one has 1.75" primaries & secondaries, vs. 1.5" on the old one.:)
also installed a new hei dizzy (old was a $20 jy one, which worked ok, but I wanted new).

Only bought the dizzy because I'd already bought the base-plate from the same seller (got smoking deal too... $120 for both).

She fired right up & sounded way better (even before timing her).

Baseplates pre-rebuild/install...

Hoses & lockouts as the sit on my workbench (waiting for a few more fittings to arrive):

Finished product (still need to clean up the wiring & run 1-2 vacuum lines):

Spring of 09 my motor started smoking... (rings &/or valves).
I found a good deal on a 15k mile rebuilt sbc & swapped it in.
While I was at it, I fabbed up new motor mounts & reworked the front crossmember.

Dec 09 started the new cage halo:

I had a minor mis-hap while welding in the halo, a spark caught my ds seat on fire... : eek : toasted the rear of the seat, and the harness shoulder straps.
Ironically, I found another exact seat at pnp a week later (85 toyota mr2)... 1st time in years I've seen that seat anywhere....

Plans for the cage:

The a/b pillar crossbars will have a slight bend in the middle to allow better cab access:

I went with the slight bend next to the seats...
(ds seat fits fine, but I had to move/remount the ps seat... As well as bend the t-case levers).

Windshield area... With a new mounting bracket for my rear view mirror (no more wondering who is behind me on the trail).

Decided on an x over the rear seat:

The c pillar connectors were a tad shorter/harder than I thought to make with the compound angles, so I made sure it has plenty of triangulation.:flipoff2:

Yes, I finally did make some good welds...

I took some measurements & adding the diagonal connecting the top & bottom of the b pillars would take up too much room/move the seats forward too much... I also ran out of tube.

Ended up removing the permanent bulkhead to make more room for rear seat passengers...

I went to work with the sawzall.
Discovered a bit of rust where the floor/bulkhead/cab met.

Before & after:

Here is the rear after the swap...

Took me a bit of time to get the front in.
I moved the axle back a few inches so I had to do all new spring/perch mounts.

I also finalized my doubler & tire plans:

sm465/np241/NP205, h2 rims w/staun beadlocks on 37" BFG krawlers.

I had to modify the Ford 205 for rear shift (it will run flipped).
These levers will connected to my twin sticks.

It will be mated to a sm465/np241 once my doubler arrives.
Today I pressure washed both:

Here is my d60, on new to me 44044s (it sat too tall, so I have since swapped back my yj springs).
Keeping with the overbuild theme, today I made steering linkage from 1.5" .25 wall tube. :yikes:

Doubler is done.... (just painted up the linkage & shif trails tonight.

I had to notch the frame to get the NP205 to fit.

Made an extra bracket to hold the NP205:

Also completed the new tranny cover over the doubler (no pix yet though).

This week (July 10) I installed the staun beadlocks & mounted my new BFG krawlers.

4 krawlers have less than 100 miles, 2 have about 20% tread left.
Good tires are mounted on hummer h2 rims, while the spare is on a robby
gordon simulated beadlock. (second spare is off a rim).

How far offset is your drive train, when I had the 454-400-205 in my 800 it all fit in no problem

edit, I just realized that you are running a flipped 205

Spent the weekend on the rubicon. (disabled sports run).
Tahoe to rubicon springs Friday
springs to buck island & back Saturday
springs to tahoe on Sunday.
It wheeled really well.

Some minor problems I had to fix/work on:
1 front locking hub won't disengage
rear wheel centers weren't ground out enough so they didn't sit flush on the rotors (there is a little notch/step that gets fatter).
Power steering went out (I'm now the master of front digs).

Picked up a new power steering pump yesterday.
It was under warranty when it died on the disabled sports run (2 days short of being 1 year old).

While I was at it, I picked up a second pump, which was a bit more heavy duty.
The warranty pump will become a trail spare.

Here it is in camp just before the trip out...

img_1327.jpg

Turned out the box caused the pump to go out.
I swapped in a spare box & the new pump.

Spent 8 days in tahoe (aug 15-22nd).

Took the kids to buck island & back (from tahoe side) on that Wednesday.
Explored fire roads/minor wheeling around barker pass on that Friday.
Did a rescue mission helping brandon down to the springs on Saturday...

Just before we left for the buck island:

Returning through the springs that afternoon:

I broke 2 of 4 welds from the frame to the rear bumper on the way in to the springs. So I put the tire on the roof........
3rd & 4th welds held, but one can-opened the frame until it separated...

Awesome thread, Mike. Great pics. And we love how you wheel the crap outta that thing. Looks like a lot of fun!
Did it really have an m-22/Dana combo when you got it??? That's a new one on me.
