Miz Phelpsette Phase II

As I waited for this page to load, I quickly tried to predict in my mind what gramps might say...and nailed it! Probably not that tough to do in this case, so I won't wrench my shoulder outta socket to pat myself on the back. This has been an entertaining saga to follow.

I wuz gently proddin' gramps to build an ultimate trailerdragger outta the lobster valley t'ette! A full on goose-toter for two rigs, 12k winch on the trailer with a dual battery pak, and enclosed tool/tiedown storage, floodlights on stanchions, etc.

If charlieo had decided he did not want miz phelps ta come live with him, she wuz gonna live here and gitta diamondplate aluminum trailertote bed.

Then mikee would have sumthin' to use with that new triple car hauler I hear he's lookin' at from big tex! I can see a hole in the roof of the suburban for a neckover...or turn it into a wagonmaster wannabe.

Does gramps know about that one???

Treve

we have met once and you knoe exactly what I will say about draggin more IH's to my house. The kid has known me all his life and he still can't figer it out?? Go figure !

Mm

at first I wasn't that excited about converting the lobster valley t ette into a two hauler. Then I realized there is a Scout 80 & 800, 3 t alls, 1 s-100, 4 Scout II's, 1 t ette,
1 treveler and oh yes one IH fire truck all sitin around lookin for a new home. Maybe I need to think seriously about the three hauler. They haul both ways, don't they? :winky: :winky:

I had a patient come through my lab last week, he noticed the picture of my Scout on my computer. The first thing out of his mouth was "do you live in silverton?"

Oh yeah, I haven't forgotten. The lad's addiction has gotten quite out of hand, but I suspect there's been some enabling going on over the years.

Woo boy did you hit the nail on the head there. only it's not years it days....ask pop who has sent who more cl links to ihs in the past week? Who has driven to look at more ihs for sale in the past week?? I'll give you all a hint. It wasn't the young good looking one not named ihgramp..:dita:

I figured as much. In all fairness to gramps, there is just a hint of the pot calling the kettle black in my previous statement. It's all good. These things are just waiting out there hoping someone comes to give them a good home. It's up to us to save them...each and every one of them. Bless you guys for your efforts...sick and twisted as they May be.

I've been working a deal for several years now...a "location" with way more than 50 fullsize rigs sittin' in it! The "owner" is completely mentally unstable (no, the surname is not r.o.t.h.), and is known to shoot on site anyone coming around the place. So this has to be done "gently".

Just a week ago I ferreted out additional info about the sitch from a completely unexpected source...

But...once gramps "retires" again, maybe he can move right into "the boneyard bizz"??? He's got a real good start on that now, just take a look in the racks in the shop! Steel scrap prices took a major nosedive a few weeks back...so now maybe the scrappin' of this junkiron May slow down. The trickledown behind that...what's mikee gonna do now for gazzdinero????

Update!

Charlieo sez the rig was offloaded yesterday (day ahead of schedule). He's estatic with miz phelps in the flesh and rarin' ta go with the swap! Tha boy ain't gonna mess arount!

Charlie's definitely an IH noob since he thinks she's even nicer than he figgrd on!

Ain't it great when adventures havea happy ending gramps and mikee??

Two weeks out and charlieo is already gittin' up close and personal with miz phelps. Tha boy don't scruu arount.

Whats he gonna do for running gear? I would hope that going that far he isn't just going to do a motor swap without addressing at least the front end. Also is that just a drop in motor or is he going to freshen it up or anything?

It's a 6bt -- nothing to freshen up!

Seriously though - from what I have seen price wise - it would probably be cheaper and easier to run one 'til it blew - buy another off craigslist - swap it -- repeat. The price to rebuild one is crazy compared to the price of a solid runner with only 150,000 miles :d

Freshen up = power wash??

This is just a trial fit to see what the big picsure looks like...several points of interference to be delt with. And those dam frames are flexi-flyers so that will need mucho attention too.

Charlio's dealing in several axle arenas now, and again... Has "options" for the finished product, but that doesn't have to be delt with right now. He does have considerable experience with stuff like this, he's runnin' a built Jeep trail rig now on the normal sii axles.

The entire rig will be moved to another location /real shop (not shade tree) this weekend in order to git serious.

Yeah by freshen up I mean gaskets, wash, paint. I understand no need to rebuild or anything. I now understand this is simply mock up, just looked very complete for mock up purposes. From my personal experience it is way easier to build the running gear and get the suspension worked out, then move onto motor placement, crossmembers and what not. Just my .02 either way it is awesome to see some old iron getting some love and should be a really sweet truck when complete.

So I finally got my tranny ordered(reman 47rh). It should be here Wednesday or Thursday. With the little time I had this weekend, the boys and I started the face lift. I'd say we are about 1/3 through the body now.

This Sunday I am planning on the relocation and motor/tranny mount fab.

As for the motor, it comes from a very reliable cummins guru out of cinncinatti. It is said to have 85000 miles ready to run and never turned up. For now I am just trying to get everything working and I will address many more details later. Under different sircumstances, I might do a few things different but right now I am racing the stork!!

More pics after this weekend.

Got sum new poop in from charlie this week, so I'll post it for him. Lottsa' multi-tasking going on out in tha ohio valley!

"I've been a little more than busy lately so I haven't had a lot of time for keeping you guys up to date.
First, on nov. 2, harlan monroe owen was born at eleven pounds five and three quarter ounces. The doctor's last guess prior to birth was eight and a quarter pounds. And imagine my wife, 5,2" and 110 lbs normal.
I instantly found out what all the hype is about. He's perfect and we have never been happier.

The "green giant" ( ho ho ho )
I've pulled the big bastard with a come along on to a trailer 3 times. Then braved the highway with a borrowed overloaded Chevy to get it to a nice shop in louisville. With the help from some friends I managed to drop the drive line in and then remove it 3 times for what feels like nothing. On the third time, we had the motor, tranny, and transfercase hanging from a forklift. I was next to the truck with both hands on the engine, adam was inside the truck pushing down on the transfer case to clear the firewall and floor as Matt was backing the drive line out with the fork lift. Every thing was fine until the whole thing started flopping around. Matt said it felt like the engine got caught on something and popped loose. It felt like he just dropped the clutch. At any rate around 1500 pounds of engine seemed to use adam's hand to lift the front wheels of the tette.
After the emergency room and a visit to the specialist all they found was minor damage and he is feeling alot better. I had to go pull a nv4500 for him while he was all swollen. Also his hand pushed the floor pans up about six inches.

Speaking of floor pans, mine are all steel again. Just need to go back with some seem sealer and carpet. It took me about 30 hours but I really learned alot. I think I used a different tecnique on each door jam.

We did just enough body work to make the thing hidious. With the black primer patches, jen says its the kind of car you wish your parents would drop you off around the corner in.

Now in the past week since I last talked to Bob I have accomplisted more by myself in my driveway than all the trips to the shop.

The motor mount area is boxed with 1/4 inch for about 18 inches. Both motor mounts are fully welded and gusseted. I am putting that triangle brace back in this week as I decided to relocate the ac condenser to the top somewhere. I also welded some of the seems up front around those rivets because they seem loose and I am sure they lend some flex. The front portion of the frame will be ready to paint soon and it looks wicked strong. I also plan on some boxing, gusseting and strengthening in the rear when I pull the bed off later.

The tranny mount uses the stock dodge bushing and a crossmember made of quarter wall 2" square tubing and 1/4" tabs. It holds the tranny great but will require a little more mod to fit the front driveshaft.

The transfer case (np241d) happens to have a mount too so for overkill, I picked up a stick of 1 x 3 1/8" tubbing to build another simple crossmember.

This weekend, I should be able to completely assemble the tranny/motor and drop it back in. Hopefully for the last time.

Sorry I've been lousy with the pics but I will start sending more soon ( obama will probably teach me to manage my time better )

charlieo"

charlie's new litter weighs about as much as charlie's new motor.

Here's one of tha pics he sent me.

To mm and ihgramp,

just took the time to read this thread.

Next time, call me. I have a trailer in my driveway that needs to be used once in a while. Right now, you need a come-a-long to get stuff onto it, but it is much better than a tow bar any day.
