Man o Man. Don't drive it in the snow.

Haha. Drove the Scout to work today on snow covered streets for the first time here in denver. That was an interesting experience. The tires kept finding hidden tracks in the snow and trying to follow them. The worst was when the Scout suddenly jumped to the right about three feet and scared the hell out of this nice little ol lady in the mercedes next to me. Apparently camo colored scouts are scary. Time to start saving the pennies to replace all the steering components. As for the questions, is there supposed to be solid difinitive gears between 4h and 2h. When shifting from 2h to 4h I have to give it a solid pull and can feel a little difference in the positions, but when going from 4h to 2h the shifter just sort of slides up and I assume it is in 2h because if I go any further it is in neutral.
Next question, where do both ends of the rear seatbelts mount. I have two female ends bolted to the backside of the seat base, but there are no male ends to the belts and I don't see anywhere to bolt these in.
Thanks for any help.

Rear seat belts bolt together, center of floor, right behind where the back of the seat would be when down on the floor. Means you have to thread them out between the top and bottome of the seat to raise the seat up.

Wow, okay. The po bolted the female ends into the seat itself. I will have to poke around behind the seat and look for the holes.

The female ends should be bolted to the seat, at the hinge location, its only the middle straps that go to the floor behind the seat. That way in case of an accident, your gut holds the back seat down to the floor......

You can see the hole in the floor in the first picture, just along the dark/light line running between the wheel wells.

I wish I would have taken the Scout to work this morning, I got stuck twice on the way in......

Just to rule out the simple stuff, you're sure the front hubs were engaged prior selecting 4hi with the shifter? The front axle prop shaft is in place? 4hi with a d20 equipped Scout II is all the way back on the lever towards the seat. It can't go any further in that direction. Driving in snow, it doesn't take long to figure out if your front axle is providing any traction assistance or not.

Scoutboy - I am sure it is in 4 wheel. The issue is the lever feeling sloppy. When shifting between drive and 2nd gear on an automatic there is a point at which you can feel the lever shift and lock into the proper place. With the d20 I don't have that definite locked in feeling in 2h.

Int77 - thanks for the pictures. Where are you in denver.

I am in denver near 1st ave and qubec. I drove down 6th to havana today at about 8 am, it was rough going in a rwd car.

In my Scout the 4hi dosent really feel like it "locks" in. It will actually jump out coasting, but 4wd has always worked, some times coasting I hold it in 4wd so it dosent jump out.....

You'll never get the ratcheting action in the t-case lever that you do from the trans gear selector, but the engagement should be firm both into and out of 4hi. If it feels sloppy, that indicates an issue either with the shifter linkage or internally, or both.
