issues with my oil pump turning too hard

68 1200C - Newly rebuilt 345 4bbl, block decked .005, .030 bored, heads ported for added flow. I'd like to prime the new oil pump prior to starting however the pump turns too hard. I'm using an old dist housing with a gutted shaft & spinning the shaft to prime....just can't get anything coming up. What am I doing wrong?
 
I'm spinning the pump with an old gutted out distributor. I removed everything off the shaft (gear, points, springs, weights, etc) and slid it back into the housing after greasing it down. It spins freely. The crankcase is filled with 10w30 synthetic for break-in. It was suggested that a battery drill shouldn't be used. I'll throw my 1/2" electric on it tonight & respond.
 
Okay - I've had some time now to look further into this. Spinning the distributor with the oil sending unit removed made a mess. My next inclination was wrong head gaskets. Upon tearing everything down, removing the rocker bolts showed oil. Apparently I've got oil making it to these bolts & thats where it stops. Now - the old OEM bolts had no hole up through the center and the bolt's shank measures identical to the new grade 8 bolts I replaced them with. Also, looking down on the head (see attachments), there's one seperate hole (I assume for oil passage) in the head facing it's matching tower. The top of the towers have no groove so how does this oil make it to this line of rockers? Please advise - thank you.

You're most of the way there. From the stand into the shaft, then out to the rockers. The cam supplies pulses of oil to each bank of cylinders. This means the engine needs to rotate to be in position to see oil at the rockers.

"Pulses of oil to each bank of cylinders". Apparently - since I wasn't rotating the engine, the cam was in a position where oil wasn't being pumped. What your saying is all I had to do was rotate the cam and I would have seen oil?
 
Not rotate it while priming but turn it (cam or crank) a bit at a time and prime, repeat this process until you have the oil up top on both banks. The oil holes in the cam bearings only allow oil to the top end, when they line up. The right and left bank are fed from two separate cam bearings ( 2 and 4) IIRC, that don't necessarily line up at the same point of rotation.
