issues with my oil pump turning too hard

68 1200C - Newly rebuilt 345 4bbl, block decked .005, .030 bored, heads ported for added flow. I'd like to prime the new oil pump prior to starting however the pump turns too hard. I'm using an old dist housing with a gutted shaft & spinning the shaft to prime....just can't get anything coming up. What am I doing wrong?

It should spin pretty easy until it builds pressure. There is no gear on the shaft, right?

what are you spinning the shaft with ? and what weight oil ?
