international loadstar 1600 carb problems

Running really ruff think I need to time it. I know you need to time off of the 8 cylinder but to what degrees does the engine need to be timed?

Factory spec is 0 deg, however they usually run best around 10 deg adv. Back off on the timing if it pings.

Went and cleaned off the dampner and all I can see for marks is one line is there supposed to be degree markers on these or do you need a special timing light to time these?

It looks like this ----->

May have to unbolt the shroud, an push it back against the engine, then lay on the fender, snake your arm down in there an get it wiped off. This have the " batwing hood " ? Maybe even snake a pressure washer wand, down there and hit it a few times ?

Yes has batwing hood but I have it off. Ill try taking the shroud off and see what that gets me.

Mine has same hood. The pressure washer could work or clean from the bottom. I had to buy a distributor wrench to get at the bolt with all that governor/tach stuff in the way. Paint the line white so you can see it.

Sorry its been so long but im back working on the load star and was wondering if somebody could give the step by step procedure for timing this engine? I want to completely start over so i need to re set everything.

Timing the engine:
Open hood.
Attach timing light to battery + & - posts and attach to plug wire #8.
Start engine and allow to warm up to normal operating temp.
Adjust point dwell/gap to spec.
Adjust idle speed to spec.
Adjust timing with timing light, loosen distributor hold down bolt to adjust timing.
Rotate dizzy until timing is in spec, then tighten bolt.
Remove timing light.
Close hood.

ok but what are the specs? Thats what i need to know. Im at 6300 ft elevation i no that has alot to do with how to time this engine

How do i set the initial timing to get the truck to run? Currently the truck wont run and i have narrowed it down to the timing so what i want to do is reset the timing to get it to at least start and idle then adjust it with the timing light

You really need to get a manual for this truck.

Okay

1. Remove plug wire and cylinder #8 spark plug.
2. Place a piece of tissue paper over the vacant plug hole.
3. Rotate engine clockwise with breaker bar on crank hub bolt until air poofs the tissue paper away from the plug hole. This tells you that #8 piston is coming up on the compression stroke.
4. Hold a length of dowel rod or pencil down in the plug hole so you can feel the piston coming up as more clockwise rotation is done slowly.
5. Stop rotating when the piston is at the top of the stroke and the scribe line in the hub balancer is aligned with '0' on the timing index.
6. Replace the spark plug and the plug wire.
7. Lift distributor cap up from distributor to reveal innards.
8. Note the location of the rotor. The plug wire location directly above the rotor needs to be #8. If it isn't #8 right now, then you need to make it #8 and then re-route the remaining plug wires in clockwise fashion around the distributor in accordance with the firing order.
9. With a fully charged battery, spark and fresh fuel, the engine will now start and run. Additional timing adjustments may be required from there to optimize engine performance.
