IH Parts Americas 1-Ton Travelall

@ mitch--your t-ette should be able to handle 6000 lbs. Without any problem.

The going isn't the problem with any light line rig. The engines used were the almost identical with the loadstar engines. The problem is the stopping.

I have towed my equipment trailer with my 6000 lbs. Tractor on the trailer with my '65 3/4-ton t-all without any issues.

Unlike Jeff's t-all I still have the stock axles and brakes. Unboosted four wheel drums do not stop as well as boosted four wheel discs.

With that caveat understood, towing large weights with our vintage rigs is very doable.

Strange question possibly, but could you give us a measurement of,.. Say, the top of the rocker (base of the door opening), or something that could give us d series owners a sense of how high your truck is? Thanks! :icon_cool:

Sorry to take so long to answer this question. Finally had the Travelall in the shop on flat ground to perform some maintenance. I measured between the two doors and got 25" from bottom of rocker to floor not including the 1/2" or so lip that hangs down from the rocker.

Jeff,

I really like this build. I would like to do some similar things to my 73 travellette. I have looked at this several times but I cannot see it. Could you post the model number of the air spring helper kit that you used?

Also, what did you use for the new a/c parts, you post that you had them in your stock. Maybe, I overlooked where you posted what you used. I also have a good box, but would like to change the compresser, condenser, etc.

Thanks for the help.

I checked my computer files, pictures and such but unfortunately I did not document which air bag kit that I used. All receipts from last year are filed away but if I do happen to come across it I'll post it up.

As for the new a/c parts I happened to have one of our ama(Arizona mobile air) kits in stock for a Scout II and used its condenser, hoses and compressor. We have our own in house bracket that we use to mount the compressor.

Jeff, great buildup! I enjoyed looking it over at rmihr, you done great work to it! I took a good look at those front spring hangers there, but failed to take a picture, and now I can't remember.... I'm wanting to do something similar on my '73 pickup, could you put up a better lit picture of how they are bolted to the factory portion riveted to the frame? I'm questioning myself how to do that, as that piece isn't flush with the bottom of the frame and it seems not ideal to bolt to.

Jeff,

do you have any pictures of the piece that goes over the rear view mirror for the 69 d series? I am trying to replicate it, and any pictures with a scale for reference, or a broken one would be great. Those things are next to impossible to find.

I agree mitch they are extremely hard to find. Mine was in a million pieces and got lucky that my brother Isa had one for me(although it was in a few pieces too but repairable). I'll get a picture of it in the very near future for you. If you do decide to make some of these I'll want a couple of them myself.

Jeff the upper pass. Side shock mounts looks to be a Ford unit f150 or ranger unit. I have been looking all over the internet and found the dorman cat and downloaded it. In post #5 I see on the mount there is what looks like a part number stamped on it. Could you tell me if that is the part number?

Thanks!

I think this is it

item details

Looks just like the one in post #5 $30 off amazon!!!

Sorry for the late reply as I missed your posts. Looks like you found it. Yes it was a dorman brand shock mount and the Ford ranger application sounds correct.

Hey, didn't I just see this truck in "readers rides" in peterson's November 4wheel and off road?

Jeff,
my own t/a is going to need a going over in similar fashion. I notice in the pics of the engine being replaced, the fan clutch (and possibly the fan?) do not look like original light line parts. Having bled much over fan clutch, fan and radiator issues (ask mm) what parts are those? Also, have you implemented a non-stock radiator mounting setup?

This relates to your a/c system also, as I installed an ama kit a few years ago. At the time, I replaced txv by cross-checking with an a/c shop in riverside, CA. I then foolishly trashed the oem part. Since then my a/c has not really delivered vent temps as low as it should, and by monitoring the high and low pressures while running, it seems my replace txv May not be providing sufficient flow. Do you what the part # or technical specs are for the oem 69-73 txv? Mines a '72.

Last question, related to both of the above: installed the largest parallel flow condenser I could fit behind the stock pickall center grill support. Its about 20-21 inches wide and 14 inches tall; yours seems bigger! :icon_stare: this seems to fit into the fan clutch/radiator packaging issue, have you fabbed something special?

The fan clutch was a nos IH part that I have had for many years. The fan itself was a stock used part. The Travelall cools great but something is wrong with that fan clutch. At higher rpm's the fan feels out of balance at times. With the fan clutch being new but sat around for a long time I feel the fluid inside isn't good anymore. Before I make the trip out to the nationals in ohio later this year I plan on swapping the set up out for one of our bolt on fan clutch set ups.

Sorry but I don't have those specs written down anywhere or know them without doing a bunch of research.

My condenser is not any bigger as it measures out the same as yours and is a ama unit.

Jeff,

I have a 73 travelette that came with factory air. I was wondering if you could put me together a kit with the new valve, hoses, compressor, and drier. I think it should be the same as what you installed in this Travelall. I want to put something in mine that I know will work and you have done all the research. I already have a new condenser. Please let me know what you can do, or if I need to contact you direct.

Thank you

Your a/c system in your 73' is different than the one in my 70'. All the underdash components are what is different and would use a completely different hose set up. We can still set you up with some of the parts like the compressor, bracket, condenser and receiver drier. Other parts like the hoses would need to be figured out upon install. Yes we can spend the time to research and develop all this as a kit but we would not have time until this winter at the earliest and I assume you want to stay cool this summer.

Thank you Jeff,

I did not realize all the under dash components were that much different. You are right about wanting to stay cool this summer. I will be in touch for the parts that I can order from you. Thank you again for your help.

Jeff,

I want to find out more on the reese hitch that was used on the Travelall. I have a d200 and would like to put a receiver hitch on it. Was this a direct bolt on?

Thank you,

julian

Drilling of some holes was required. Otherwise it bolted right up.

Jeff, I'm looking into upgrading to the 14 bolt rear under my 72. From what I've heard, it's about as bolt in as can be with the GM 52" springs. Is this truly an afternoon parts swap fest, or is there some modification, fab or welding required? I don't want to assume its this easy and then have my truck down for a month in my garage because there's a really important, time consuming step involved.

Also, I'm still interested in a pair of those front spring mounts for the front springs. My l/f is bent and the truck doesn't sit right because of it.

Ps: late model GM tahoe/suburban running boards fit nicely!
