Just bought a 1974 Scout 2 so I guess I've officially joined the binder owner ranks. Wife snapped a pic of it before I drove it home so it's all I have for now if I can get it uploaded. It needs some work so I'll start a project thread soon but, gotta say, I'm proud and excited!!! Ok, I'll add the pic from my pc.

Well congratulations. Looks like the kiddos are digging it. Quite a shackle lift going on under there. I hope the advice helped you in the deal making process.
 
Thanks guys! Yeah, the kids definitely love it and the shackle lift is obvious. Plan to maybe do a spring over conversion but want to know more about road handling before I decide to do that. Best part, I'm getting another 74 that's complete and all origional, minus the egine. Had the 345 in the other one, plug got knocked out of the oil pan and burned it up.
 
Ok good. So you can get a top on that puppy and not freeze to death. When in doubt IHPA suspension parts. Still doesnt ring like ihon.

Is this the truck with the 318 or a different one? I was curious to hear about that truck after you saw it. I always chuckle when I see "just needs a......otherwise perfect" statement in those adds.
 
Hey wes. Yeah, it's the one with the 318. I looked it over really good and was able to drive it home. The engine is decent, could probably use a rebuild but, after I get the other 74, I'm debating on a 6bt transplant. The only rust I found was in the floor pan behind the seats where the bed rises up for the back seats. It's all the way through rust but just a narrow strip. Might be able to just weld a bead in it narrow. It has a Holley 700 double pumper on it that needs dialing in but in good shape. The 727 trans looks new or either a fresh rebuild mated up to the Dana 40 texas pattern. The front shaft is out and the axles look to be different but haven't had time to dig in that far. Either way, the other 74 is all original with a pto winch to boot, so I can use those axles and diff gearing to get the 4wd going. I'm not liking the suspension on it so going to change that out. Have my homework to do but I want to fit 33s under it and have it sit with just enough clearance for them. Other than that, the electrical needs a fair amount of work but nothing I can't handle. It does already have the hid headlights though. Talked him down to $1500 and getting the other 74 for $300 so both for less than his ad price. I'll put more pics up as soon as I get a chance.
 
A cummins 6bt in a Scout???:yikes: good lawd!!! The fully dressed long block weighs in at @ 1200 lbs. The IH sv8 engines are themselves considered quite portly at @ 800 lbs dressed. The sb mopar is like a lap-band surgery for the Scout. Now a 4bt on the other hand...:idea:
I don't think you got hurt too bad on this deal. Obviously you have some budget to work with and you don't seem to be nervous about the prospect of getting up to your armpits in alligators to get this project vehicle where you want it to be.

Lol, let's just say, I ain't skeered! I've had a few other hobby toys in the past so I know how old rides can be. Money is something I can overcome. I know quite a few folks and bartering is always a fun option to cash. You can gather a good selection of parts when you have decent enough skills to trade.

Hey, I can be convinced to go another way. Tell me more about the vt365. I like the cummins for lots of reasons but, if the International can fit the bill, I'm all for it. Would probably be less work for me which is always a good thing!!!
 
I'd really like to see, and build for myself, a vt275 powered Scout II. Out of the box the vt275 is close to a sv345 in weight, hp and torque.
 
The vt 365 is also known as the Ford 6.0 powerchoke. The vt 275 is a v6 model that has the front two cylinders loppd off if I remember. I think International calls the vt275 the maxxforce 5. But I can remember. Anyways obviously the 6.0 can be found everywhere. The 275 can be found in for vans. Both are relativly light engines and produce tuneable numbers. I agree the vt275 would be the ultimate v6 powered Scout if its the engine im thinking of.
 
Didn't they have a lot of problems with the Ford 6.0 powerstroke? I would imagine it's the same with the 4.3 as well. I'm also wanting it to be mechanically fuel managed as well as turbo. I think the 6.0 is electronic if I remember right.
 
Ford had problems with the 6.0 for a few reasons. 1 their emission equipment doesnt let the vt breath. 2 no matter what Ford wants to believe there is no need to force a 6.0 into an f350 and 450. 3 a v8 looks pretty but for towing purposes get a straight 6. Theres alot of reasons the Ford 6.0 had issues. Very few of them were internationals fault. As long as you arent towing a backhoe with your Scout the vt will perform perfectly :icon_rolleyes:

another option for you May be the 6.9 idi. The former mv404 turned diesel is pretty light. Thunder pumpkin the orange terra here has a 6.9 in it.

Like I said its what 'I' want to see. This iw your Scout man. And as long as you enjoy what you do to it and you love your rig then to hell with the rest of us. Cause it'll still get mad props from me.

Ok, the 6.9 does get my interest. Need to research the specs with a turbo and bore job. How much modding did you have to do to fit it in there? I still prefer the torque you get from a straight 6 but that 4.3 rates 40 pounds more than the 6bt. Wonder if that's without the crappy eco-friendly exhaust though. If not, there's no telling what that thing would do with a better exhaust system. Only drawback is electronic fuel management. Wonder if there's a way around that? I really appreciate all the input guys! In the end, I just want a solid, middle of the road performer that I can depend on. It will end up being my daily driver but with enough umph to do a little playing in.
 
Not my Scout man. Belongs to another guy on here. But heres my wild guess. Motor mounts, transmission. The bw t-19 came mated to the 6.9 and would be a good option. Or the ugly e40d automatic.

If you youtube scouting the pinelands you can see his rig if I remember right

the 6.9 with a banks setup will churn out terrifying numbers. If you're looking at a bore then the 7.3 idi is the exact same block but just a bored version and shares nothing in common with the 7.3 powerstroke the t444e.

We put a t444e in a loadstar and got 15mpg so a 6.9 in a Scout could net you some great highway numbers.

Welcome to the IH online family. Looks like you purchased a great Scout platform for your build. Just the ussual dents, scratches, and rust spots that these ole beauties have. Be fairly hard pressed to find one that doesn't have these beauty marks. There are a couple other doc's floating around here in these parts. Starten to feel like I'm in med school for Scout's - just kidding. The topic of diesel motors is kind of out of my league. I just haven't been around them enough, yet, to know much about them.

You mentioned earlier about seeing how it handles for when ya get into doing a SOA conversion. I would recommend looking into doing a shackle reversal install in the front. I have installed two kits on two of my own scouts, along with installing a few more on other peoples scouts. And from personal experience, that alone helps greatly with the way these scouts handle, both on the highway and off-road

Thanks for the welcome scooter. Like I said, you guys are making me feel right at home.

I haven't time to do as much research as I want lately so I'm hoping some of you could point me in some directions. The 6.9 ibi is looking more and more promising and I'll definitely go with a standard trans. Hopefully there's an od model that will mate up. I need to look into that bw t-19 runner mentioned. My weak spot and where I'm getting hung up is on suspension. I've never done anything with any kind of 4wd vehicle. I know I want to run 33s on this thing and an SOA is starting to look like too much of a lift for what I want. Are there any other options that will let me run 33s and be safer than an SOA? I don't need to be jacked way high, just enough to run the 33s and have fair offroad travel in the suspension. Also, the 33s look small on an SOA rig in my opinion, lol.
