Carter Thermoquad "Spreadbore" Stuff

Michael mayben

I enjoyed reading your posts regarding the cartertq rebuilds. I thought I had someone here locally that could rebuild mine but now after reading your posts I'm scared to death to let him just "have at it". Mine is from my 1981 dodge d250 truck, 360, 5.9. I have looked and looked for the serial number on the carb but I have never found it. Rear left base of the unit?? Anyways are you still rebuilding them? Whats your work load these days? How long might it take to get you to do it? How best to contact you? Feel free to email me here and I'll reply. If anyone else has any answers I'm all ears. I am a new member to this website first post. Truck is in great shape not abused 48,000 original miles. Carb looks to be in good shape but leaks, and very difficult to restart when hot. Cold starts are not an issue.

Hi john. Obviously, I'm not michael, but I didn't want you to feel ignored. Michael has been out of state attending to family matters for the past couple months. Last I heard, he is set to return home pretty soon. No doubt he will have quite a backlog of things to catch up on after he takes some time to settle in. I would encourage you to check in here once a week and scan a few forum sections for fresh mayben tracks and then give him another shout out then.

Scout

thank you for the reply. I'll keep checking back and try to make contact. I'm working on the truck and the carburetor has been a concern. Just want to make sure it gets rebuilt correctly.

Thanx

Hi wayne,
I think michael is hanging low to get things taken care of on the farm. I had a long conversation with him about the time maybenville was happening. He had a lot of customer work to clean up so until that gets done he'll stay off line. He monitors ihon often so maybe he will chime in if it is a desperate situation.

Hi Robert,
I am as desperate as I can be. Mm had my carburetor for about 2 years now and my truck is about to be evicted. Please help.

Rotten news wayne. I thought you had sourced a mixer that was working well for you. Is it not smog compliant? I wish I had an answer for you man. It seems all I've got is questions. Sorry for your woes.

I'm of the opinion that some how finished or not these carbs that are in limbo be boxed up and returned to their owners asap. I think the process is not functioning. With the bee coming up and Jeff heading to it. He can gather it all up and distribute it appropriately. Maybe Jeff can answer this.

Hey wayne- unless you're going "all original," you can use a q-jet and still pass smog. I've got one on my '79 down here in socal and its passed every time no problem. As far as a visual inspection, I think most techs have never seen a Scout, or a t-quad for that matter. A stock looking q-jet fits right in the decor.
If you need pics or help plumbing, let me know. I'll bang some off to you.

I've got a thermoquad sitting in my garage off a '79. I can't guarantee that it works perfectly but it wasnt leaking and was shooting gas properly when I pulled it from my cracked engine. I'm up in redwood city. Pm me if you're interested.

Hi tahoedonner,
yes I am interested. How much do you want to your tq carb? I am in san jose and I can pop up to redwood city whenever you are around, or something.

Reading through this thread has been kinda scary...I hope wayne got his carb back.

Anyway...anyone have any advice on where or who can and will reliably rebuild one of these thermoquads for a 1979 Scout II?

I don't know if he got his original back. I know that he purchased another used sii variant. Scott hickman (member 1975ih200) is pretty knowledgeable about the t-bogs. I don't know if he would be willing to rebuild one for you, but you could ask. At the very least, he would probably be willing to advise and direct you in the process.

Hope this thread is still going:

I have a 79 Traveler, 345, 4bbl, TF Trans, D44 front and back, a/c, tilt, cruise, p/b - the basics.

I am in the process of restoring this beauty, and it's been a long, slow process (30 years to be exact). I have the engine all ready to go, have redone all electrical (dash, lights, engine compartment). Now, I am in the process of reinstalling the Carter TQ carb. I need some advice: I bought another TQ to replace the original that was smashed up. The replacement is identical to the original (vacuum lines, markings, attachments, etc. I have attached some pix to this post. In looking at the pix, the carb has been sitting for 30 years in a box, on a shelf in my garage, it has NEVER been used, has NEVER had ANY gas/fluids through it, it's just been on my shelf. As you can see, there is some surface rust on the linkages, external parts. My questions:

is there any need to do a rebuild on this TQ?
are there any internal parts that are suspect to not working? i.e. dried up, cracked, rotted?

would appreciate some advice, and thanks.

Rebuild it. There was no alcohol in fuel 30 years go. A new quality kit will have components designed to last with new fuels.

all:

I appreciate the quick response. i did buy a carb kit fro IH parts America last year (planning on this project). I took the TQ this week to a carb guy i've known for a few years. He offered to rebuild it for $180. Anyway, he also offered to bench "flow test" it for me to see if it did need the rebuild. The flow test went like a charm, the TQ works just fine, through all ranges, so i'm only out $20. given the changes in gas from 30 years ago, I still plan on doing the rebuild, just to be on the safe side. Again, I appreciate the responses.

Thanks
