BrewScout

It's alive!!!

Finally got it running. So stoked. Has way mor power then that old 304. Had a bit of a waterpump leak but installed a new gasket and was good to go.
Finished product. ...

Now that the Scout is back on the road I decided that I needed to give some attention to the top. It had several holes rusted through it. I basically just made it a little better to look at.
Bondo the holes and rubber spray coating....

I would like to get a softtop for it. I just hate that none are made with the proper shaped side windows.

Mil-Spec bed liner panels!

So I have had this idea in my head for a while. My thought process was "storage sure does suck in these. I am really sick of hearing crap roll around in the back." then I was at an army surplus and saw all those cool velcro storage pouches. So my mind started to take off.......

First I ordered a 6'x8' oiled military type canvak tarp. This would be large enough to cut in half and then fold the halves in half so I would have panels double thick.
I also ordered some olive green hook and loop material in 2" and 4" widths. Bought some nylon 1"strap, synthetic heavy duty thread and waited for my wife to leave town!

Mil-Spec bed liner panels!

First step....

Make panel shapes...measure twice!!!
Cut the border with the eyelets off. Then traced the wheelwell and started cuting.

Mil-Spec bed liner panels!

Then I test fit what I had and it fit well. Time to move on to the molle.

Making this was pretty time consuming. But turned out good. Now I needed to sew it to the canvas....

Re: Mil-Spec bed liner panels!

Beautiful work! Nice choice of colors too. Can't wait to see it installed. Looking at your design you must have a bumper mounted spare.

Thanks! I plan to eventually have a bumper mounted tire carrier. For now I dont even have a spare. (knock on wood).
Should have the other side finished later today. Maybe with enough time to get them installed.

So another long day of sewing these up. Wouldnt want to do that for a living!
Got them finished. Learned a lot about something that I really dont care about. Oh well. And here's the pictures....

I used snaps to attach the panels. I think I May find some cool looking d-ring type anchors to attach the panels as well for added strength.
Need to go buy some surplus mil-spec pouches. Will be nice for the back seat passengers. They will have a place to put their crap.

There is a metal supply place about 8 miles from me that usually has old surplus pouches. So I drove over to see what they had and this is what I picked up.

I do wish they all matched but for a few bucks each I'm not going to complain.

Off Road Bumper

Today I worked on beefing up my front bumper. Had some 1 3/4 dom tubing laying around the garage so thats what I used.
Started by taking some measurments and drawing it out on the floor. Then bent the tube.

Off Road Bumper

Was looking at the bumper this morning. Something was missing. I didnt like the unfinished look of the winch plate. I decided to run a tube in front of it tying the plate to the tube section. I think it looks better now.

Before. ...

Diggum' smacks:d!!! Looks good.
I also like the idea of the molle system incorporated into the sides of the Scout. I have always wondered how the side could be put to good use!

Thanks punjig. Was debating making a recessed compartment but thought a molle system would be better. Thinking now about redoing my headliner to match. Tons of room for overhead storage.

Custom fab stereo mounting.

A great buddy of mine was nice enough to give me totally free a pretty nice touch screen dvd, navigation head unit. Problem is that it is huge.

I decided to fabricate a "box" out of sheet metal. Had to cut the dash but I think it works! Check it out

as always measure twice. You can see my screw up here...

Here is the plate with all the big easy cuts and bends made....

Several test fits were required. When making critical cuts you want to sneak up on it....

need to pick up some shorter screws .
thinking about mounting my cb radio to the bottom.

Ran over to lowes and got screws. Was able to find some security sheet metal screws for the dash. I used red loctite on everything. I know it isnt bad guy proof but it will slow him down.

Ok so the next project is going to be building up the rear bumper. This will include a swing out spare tire carrier and a swing our jerry can holder.

This is what I am starting with...

And I pulled this off a Bronco at the local wrecking yard

And this is what I ended up with.

I didn't get a bunch of pics along the way. But I basically ran a tube around the bottom of the bumper. Then I plated the top with 1/4" diamond plate. This should make it pretty strong. Used 1 3/4" tube as the sleeve and 1 1/2" tube as the shaft. I capped the bottom of the shaft and the bottom of the sleeve. I layered a few washers with grease and then coated the shaft with grease. I installed a zerk fitting on the bottom of the sleeve to add grease as necessary.

Today I started working on the other side where I will put the jerry cans. I also wrapped the sleeves with 1/8" flat plate to give it some added strength and give a finished look.

Today I finished all of the welding and devised a way to secure the jerry can swing out. Tomorrow I will mount some rachet straps to hold the cans in. I also painted the cans so they would match.
