Off Road Bumper

Today I worked on beefing up my front bumper. Had some 1 3/4 dom tubing laying around the garage so thats what I used.
Started by taking some measurments and drawing it out on the floor. Then bent the tube.

Off Road Bumper

Was looking at the bumper this morning. Something was missing. I didnt like the unfinished look of the winch plate. I decided to run a tube in front of it tying the plate to the tube section. I think it looks better now.

Before. ...

Diggum' smacks:d!!! Looks good.
I also like the idea of the molle system incorporated into the sides of the Scout. I have always wondered how the side could be put to good use!

Thanks punjig. Was debating making a recessed compartment but thought a molle system would be better. Thinking now about redoing my headliner to match. Tons of room for overhead storage.

Custom fab stereo mounting.

A great buddy of mine was nice enough to give me totally free a pretty nice touch screen dvd, navigation head unit. Problem is that it is huge.

I decided to fabricate a "box" out of sheet metal. Had to cut the dash but I think it works! Check it out

as always measure twice. You can see my screw up here...

Here is the plate with all the big easy cuts and bends made....

Several test fits were required. When making critical cuts you want to sneak up on it....

And here is the finished product. ..

need to pick up some shorter screws .
thinking about mounting my cb radio to the bottom.

Ran over to lowes and got screws. Was able to find some security sheet metal screws for the dash. I used red loctite on everything. I know it isnt bad guy proof but it will slow him down.

Ok so the next project is going to be building up the rear bumper. This will include a swing out spare tire carrier and a swing our jerry can holder.

This is what I am starting with...

And I pulled this off a Bronco at the local wrecking yard

And this is what I ended up with.

I didn't get a bunch of pics along the way. But I basically ran a tube around the bottom of the bumper. Then I plated the top with 1/4" diamond plate. This should make it pretty strong. Used 1 3/4" tube as the sleeve and 1 1/2" tube as the shaft. I capped the bottom of the shaft and the bottom of the sleeve. I layered a few washers with grease and then coated the shaft with grease. I installed a zerk fitting on the bottom of the sleeve to add grease as necessary.

Today I started working on the other side where I will put the jerry cans. I also wrapped the sleeves with 1/8" flat plate to give it some added strength and give a finished look.

Today I finished all of the welding and devised a way to secure the jerry can swing out. Tomorrow I will mount some rachet straps to hold the cans in. I also painted the cans so they would match.

Well nothing I know of that's designed for that purpose, but heavy banding from a pallet is where I'd start.

yeah I was worried about that. Do you have any reccomendations on a proven strap and where to get it. I guess I could make something too.

I would try a crane supply or trucking supply store. The will have different fiber slings and commercial fiber tie downs. I don't know if they will carry anything 1", but it's worth a try.

I found various latches on granger that I am pretty sure I could tig weld to a piece of stainless steel strap. Just gotta order a couple and do it now.
