I've dropped the ball on this one (and others!) due to Binder Bee activity! And I'm not knowledgeable enuff regarding these boxes to work through this in my haid without looking at one!
But I have a print of that studebaker stuff in my bw 11 tech binder here, but did not have it with me to respond to your question with a "fact". But your research led to the same info I found years ago when I planned to build the tranny I have for re-sale. That "special tool" is a 0.250" gauge block...and a .250" drill bit shank will work just fine (or maybe a chunk of shank cut to fit??)! This is not a precision setting since the band and drum wear on a continuous basis.
One of our other members here had a similar condition regarding a 727 he suffered with for a few years before recently taking the time to drop the pan and check it out. After educating himself on what to do, he made the correction and is a happy camper now!
If need be, I'll flop the tranny I have on it's back and take some pics of the correct parts orientation for ya, I simply can't remember how that's supposed to look after a 30 year lapse! Guess it's time to bust into a bw and get up close and personal again!
But...at least it untracked after working on it! That is progress!
