Borg Warner 11 (AKA T-39) vacuum modulator

I've dropped the ball on this one (and others!) due to Binder Bee activity! And I'm not knowledgeable enuff regarding these boxes to work through this in my haid without looking at one!

But I have a print of that studebaker stuff in my bw 11 tech binder here, but did not have it with me to respond to your question with a "fact". But your research led to the same info I found years ago when I planned to build the tranny I have for re-sale. That "special tool" is a 0.250" gauge block...and a .250" drill bit shank will work just fine (or maybe a chunk of shank cut to fit??)! This is not a precision setting since the band and drum wear on a continuous basis.

One of our other members here had a similar condition regarding a 727 he suffered with for a few years before recently taking the time to drop the pan and check it out. After educating himself on what to do, he made the correction and is a happy camper now!

If need be, I'll flop the tranny I have on it's back and take some pics of the correct parts orientation for ya, I simply can't remember how that's supposed to look after a 30 year lapse! Guess it's time to bust into a bw and get up close and personal again!

But...at least it untracked after working on it! That is progress!

Thanks michael, I first used 3 washers that measured .246 but now have a precision .250 gage block from work to re-adjust with when I drop the pan again this weekend.
I am almost positive that when the shim/strut fell out when I was installing the valve body and I had to drop it again to get it into place I didn't verify that the manual valve was in the correct position when I bolted it back up. I did all this Saturday afternoon in 100 plus degree weather after about 3 hours sleep the night before ...... Then I got stuck on the band adjustment and had to do research. Sunday I just adjusted the band and buttoned up the pan.....should have verified everything but I was wanting to get out from under the Scout !!!! Hopefully this is just a bonehead mistake. :eek6:
I needed to run it for a bit to clean some of that dirty fluid out anyway, huh?
I did notice the Binder Bee activity.....wish I could have been there!! Not to worry, gave me time to use my own noggin :exclamation: for what it's worth  and maybe someone else can learn from my posts.

Ok...............couldn't wait for the weekend to check.

Chalk this one up in the bonehead files.....here's what I found:

And here you can see where the shifter lever to the manual valve is supposed to go....on the first detent/slot on the valve. Now I just have to put it there.

When I first cycled through the gears I stuck it in 1st with no way to pull it back out.

I'll post a pic of it in the proper position once I put it there!!!!

Great! Thanks for posting the pics, that adds to the knowledge base here for these boxes!

All buttoned up and back together right!! Here is how it is supposed to look:

Here is the front servo with .250 gage block in to adjust the front band:

Just got back from a test drive. Now running 2500-2600 rpm at 55 mph. About 2800-2900 at 65-70 mph. Looks like my problem has been fixed   and all gears work!!

you are now the ofishul beeneeweenee tranny dude!

Thanks, but until I tear the whole thing apart it's not ofishul :smile5:
I put all this in the same thread but wish I could change the title and drop the vacuum modulator part since I covered the whole valve body rebuild etc. Might help someone else at some point.

I think whatcha got posted is just fine...that is a "typical" situation on this old junk where one issue always leads to even more!

And it made us do our homework, you were able to work through the process and not shotgun it pointing fingers at the wrong root cause!

With so few IH-related folks dealing with these boxes (or at least talking about it!), there are not many opportunities for working through problems like this! And while they are "similar" to other slushbox designs, they do have their own particular problematic areas (due to lack of maintenance) regarding the shift sequence/timing and the combination vacuum/electric controls system for kickdown. Much more difficult to diagnose/deal with than regards a tf 727!

Good point, and anyone looking for info in a search will read all posts dealing with the bw-11. I searched any and everywhere I could and read everything I could find.
I am glad I got this one back to working good, my flywheel was balanced to the engine when I rebuilt it all back in nov. Wasn't looking forward to a tranny change either!!
