72 1110

Bought a 72 1110 this fall and just got it back from our local old school mechanic. Its got the 345 w/ dual exhuast and a three spd automatic tranny. Easy to say I love this truck but it doesn't love me back yet...it tends to stall when I put it in drive or slow down to make turns or stop signs. He set the timing, tuned it, and went over everything to make sure it can go down the road safe. Not sure why I'm having problems with it but I'm planning on going over it with him in the near future. I'm working on the cosmetics right now-I (somewhat) straightened the grill, I'm working on getting the right emblems on, fixing the side markers, and buffing the paint. I would like to put bigger rims & tires and maybe even lifting it to a reasonable height. Any tips, ideas, or solutions for a 17 year old with limited mechanical talent?

Welcome young'n! You've got quite a learning opportunity there. First thing with timing is that it is to be done using cylinder #8. That's different than the other makes that use #1. Next is idle speed. While you don't want it set too high, you also don't want it too low. Another is manifold vacuum. You should see 17 to 21 inches/hg steady at idle when measured with a vacuum gauge. A vacuum leak will create the symptoms you've mentioned, but that is only one of several possibilities.

It looks fairly straight from what I can tell. If it's running and driving that's awesome, sounds like it just needs a little tweaking to get it right. Like has already been stated timing on #8 about 6 to 8 degrees btdc and carb adjustment with vac gauge should get it purring like a kitten. Once these engines are tuned in and running right you can't help but fall in love with them:icon_up:
