Whats the best bearings for the rear axle on the '70-1100d t'all,d-44.(5-lug) I can move the axles in & out a good 1/8" an there is axle grease built up all inside the drums, pass., is the worst.I have new wheel cyls., to put on from ihc,so might as well do the whole dang thing!thx much for any input.Jeff

The timken bearing number should a set 10 if it has half ton axles.they are the same on both sides. You'll need a press to get the bearing off and to set the clearance on the retainer ring.dont forget to replace the axle seals and clen out the tubes.its a simple job,if you've got the right tools

Hopefully the set will still be set 10, most manufactures use common numbers the timken set is the same number as the cheaper china bearings also. If possible try to get stuff made here but you gotta do what ya gotta do. Brad

Use timken set 10 only, should be inna timken package, includes seal and lockring.

May find timken bearings inna private label package, open the box and look for timken tradename on the races. Who cares what's on the packaging if timken is inside?

Scruu napa go to a real parts house! Ihon has 'em in stock. Do a part description search on rockauto.com, use keyword "set 10" and the order data will pop up.

Gottit apart finally after extensive clean up after winds from ike! Now my ? Is,do you use a new adjuster on the pass.,side axle? Or can you re-use the adjuster? If ya have to get a new adjuster, where at?iho have them?tia! Jeff

Based on your description of the "adjusting ring" you found, that d44 does not use the timken set 10 bearing (unit bearing design). Sorry for the misinformation, but if ya don't know "which" axle code ya got, the only way to figgr out what ya need is tear it down and look at which type you have.

If the adjusting ring/retainer is not rusted beyond use, and the "keeper" can be removed and is not damaged beyond use, then you can re-use those parts. You have a "center block" differential and the end play on the passenger side axle/tapered bearing combo must be set up to "spec" as outlined in the service references. That endplay is 0.001">0.010" as measured with a dial indicator.

This system is not the same as the common "unit bearing" setup used in Scout II and other fullsize d44 axles. The bearings and seals ya need are individual items, though they May be packaged in a set also. I can give you the individual IH numbers but that does no good at the parts house. Don't you have a parts list and service manual also that shows the breakout??

All I have is my service manual,no parts manual.I think it May be able to re-use,the outer cage,of the adjuster is missing about an 1-1/2" of the cage w/the lil slots or holes in it.(retainer)gonna clean up the axle tube an see which 1 it is.guy at the machine shop where I got the set 7's said mopar used this similiar set up?Jeff, thx, michael.( napa had all parts but adjusting retainer, got a good deal on the berings, they was the last 1's,had em for a while.,inner seals was $14 ea!total w/out pressing was 90.00 2-brgs.,4 seals.)

1 more ?. Looks like another race inside the tube just before the inner seal, what rides on that if there's already a race on the axle bearing?Jeff

Many oem applications of that version of a d44 axle, especially variations for IH!

Glad ya got the right bearings...again...sorry for the misinformation, we hate that happening on this forum! But we do admit our mistakes!

As for the lock piece for the adjuster ring, should be simple to just fab a "tab" of some sort to hold the ring in place if ya can't re-use the oem keeper.

I don't think what you are seeing is an actual race before the inner seal, just a "step" in the machining process for the axle housing itself. Also...in some applications of that basic axle assembly for other oem uses, there May have been a secondary seal placed there or what is sometimes referred to as a "slinger". That had to do with the first gen versions of the axles and the seals which were actually rawhide lips. The slinger was a "felt" material that kept debris away from the rawhide which would embed in the seal lip and eat the axle surface so that a new seal would not "seal". Later development of various synthetic rubber seal materials did away with the need for the felts after rawhide seals disappeared from the marketplace (major advance!!).

Those axles have undergone continuous evolution over the years, many times the parts lists have not reflected current info. When the IH parts manual for that axle was developed, only rawhide seals were in existence. IH (and many other oem) never updated the illustrations, but the did supersede the part numbers to reflect the more modern stuff, when that occured, a "bulletin" was issued to inform the dealer base.

Same even for the actual Dana/spicer technical info...that is why we sometimes have to call 'em for help and ask to speak with the oldest customer support dude they got on staff!

Good deal Jeff! I just looked at the pics ya sent and it sure does look like the wrong race sumbody knocked in there years ago!

What would it hurt to leave the 2-inner seals out like they do on the scouts!?then overfill the carrier a bit.?Jeff, michael, when you get a minute, could you post up a pic w/out the seal?thx,Jeff

I'd not leave the inner seals out...the axle bearing set is designed to be serviced onna regular basis and uses a grease. The seal interface is designed to retain grease not gear oil. You have to increase the oil capacity so much it'll aerate the hell outta the oil slinging around from the gear set and windage in the third member will be huge.

I don't have any actual pics of this same type axle assembly. I do have some pics of the nearly identical "tapered" axle unit. Those use shims to set the axle shaft endplay, not the threaded adjuster.

That pic is in this thread:
