'70-1100D t'all rear axle bearing's?

Ok kool.,thank you very much michael.did you get them pics from my phone!? Showing the axle tube w/that blt thing in by the carrier?Jeff

Did you recover the button?

If so, ya might be able to stick it onna long magnet probe and get it back in the hole. Alongside the magnet, use a long dowel (non-magnetic) to hold the thrust in place while unsticking the magnet and withdrawing.

Here's the parts list for what I "think" is your axle...an IH code 14028 w/powrlok.

What you are describing is item #41 "axle shaft spacer roll pin". But in actuality it May be a spring. The thrust buttons hold the two cross shafts for the pinion gears in position.

You are right, ya might have to disassemble the powrlok unit to put everything back together.

There is no spring in that spacer. It is a pin. If your thrust button falls out, do not panic. Stay cool and retreive the button/s with a long magnet. To re-install: get about 3 or 4 feet of straight unbent brake line, and put some straight stiff wire(baling wire) down it. Leave about 6 or 8 inches on your end, and about an 1" or so on the end that'll go down the axle tube. The button has a hole in it, so put the button on the wire and hold it on with a slight kink in the wire. Dab some grease on the button. Snake the button/tube down the axle tube and sink 'er in the hole for the button in the thrust block. Holding the brake tube firm against the block, withdraw the wire and then roll the tube off the button; it'll stay there. Assemble the axle for that side. Repeat the same for the opposite side if the button for that side should fall out. I've done quite a few this way. The 1st time I did it, I couldn't see. To far away for glasses, and to close without them so I looked through a camera with a telephoto. Pain in the arse, but I don't need the camera now.

Dave the gear man just described the same process to me as what greg outlined about an hour ago. What IH calls a "roll pin" is just a solid dowel that aligns the two buttons together and keep the cross shafts aligned.

But....if the cross shafts are too far out of alignment to allow manipulation back to the common axis center hole, then it'll have to come out for repair.

Be real patient and steady when fishing down that tube and maybe the planets and stars will all line up real nice!

Gottit out.now to get it back in,only the pass, side w/roll pin in it was out.axles not back yet.so I'm gonna stick a broom handle in the d.side an install the pass.,side.till my axles get here.thanx greg, michael an all.Jeff

So that we all can lern stuff here, I've attached a pic Jeff just sent me showing what the item under discussion looks like!

Great pic Jeff!

Man that adjuster is nastee dude! But then...ya already know that!

Jeff does have some "alternative" sources for those types of parts, he'll know who to contact if he doesn't have any used ones around. One method would be to use the "shim" style retainer plate of the earlier "tapered axle", along with the shim pack. Install the plate before pressing on the bearing and retainer. Then calc the shim thickness needed to make the endlpay/preload come in. Take the shims and "split" one side with tin snips and manipulate each over the axle shaft. Then simply install and tighten the nuts and verify endplay before buttoning up the rest of it.

At some point, that axle musta been partially submerged in one of those ohio "spring snowmelt" slushpits where all that road salt "brine" gathers! And it went through several seasons of snowmelt!

Beleive it or not! It came from bend,or.! Only been here for 4 years since I brought it back!from scoutmansv's house.in squaw valley,he retreived for me,then I bussed up from scottsdale an drove it home.I'll be getting a hold of iho.an see what he can come up with.,or maybe re-use this 1??Jeff

Yeah, the roads over on the east side of the hill get salted too back in the old days, now they use some kinda "environmentally friendly" crap mixed with volcanic pumice for the "sand".

Bend (aka "southern California relocated to orygone") is about 80 miles straight up the hill from us! There were many IH fullsize rigs sold by that dealer there back in the day, I have two other friends back east that have t'alls that were originally sold by the dealer in bend! And a few of our club members have rigs they bought new from that dealer back in the 70's!

Look what I found in my pile in the barn!actually 2 of them.,cage is in perfect shape!Jeff, gotta go re-size pic.
