Cool truck. Your explanation is a little confusing to me. You say your truck needed a headlight assembly, which to my way of thinking comprises the bulbs and/or bucket hardware on the front of the truck. Then you show a picture of a headlight switch plug. That particular plug I know was used on the Scout II and d-line pick-alls...we're talking 70's era vehicles. I don't know if that plug was used on the earlier trucks. Does it look to be part of the original harness to you, or is that something you wired in yourself? At any rate, that style of headlight switch is not meant to go with the plug in your picture.

_sorry for confusion. I only meant that the switch for my headlights was missing so I bought one but I think it is the wrong one... I looked under dash and saw that electrical cluster pictured so I assume it means that I need something else. Thanks for the compliment. Im hoping to get it back to perfect running order.

Okay. That switch does appear to be correct for the year, make and model. The connector plug has me wondering though. It doesn't seem like a good match. I need to correct my earlier statement about it being a plug to fit a later year switch. That's incorrect. Can you see if any of the circuit identification numbers are still legible on that plug? If so, post them here.

I will look when I get home and I will try to figure out which wire goes to which terminal on that switch and hook it up. It was nice to see one of the reverse lights come on and the brake lights and turn signals work for the rear just nothing for the front yet

Sorry for the delay. There is no numbers or indicators to identify on the plug under the dash so I'm hoping someone on this forum can see it and recognize it

I'll agree with Scout boy and say the connector is probably not right. The switch you have is set up for ring lugs, and looks like it's pretty well labeled. Anyone have a wiring diagram for the switch? Otherwise looks like a long jumper wire and an ohm meter or test light to figure things out. I know there are some Scout wiring diagrams in the forums, layout of your switch is possibly very similar.

When I asked you about circuit id numbers before, I think I might have incorrectly led you to believe that they would be on the body of the plastic plug. I apologize if that was the case. They would actually be on each wire several inches back from the plug stamped in white. Any of those numbers that are still legible would be helpful. I used to have pdf files of some of the service manuals loaded on my pc, but that pc took a crap awhile ago. I have the cd roms in storage somewhere. If I could locate them, I could load them onto my current pc. I can't remember if I have the manual that covers your year and model. Anyway, that's what's needed to sort this out. A factory diagram.

Ok. I am looking with a flash light. Lots of black wires and a couple greens and one white. The black ones have 2 digit numbers. 15, 16, 20,21. But there is one black that I cant read anymore. So total wire count is 5 black wires , one white and 2 green.

Since I'm unable to refer to the correct diagram, don't take these as gospel until they can be confirmed. Consider them as educated guesses until then. This is from an early Scout 800 diagram.

#15...b+ input from ammeter.

#40(2)..output to dash panel illumination.

#16...output to floor dimmer switch.

#20...output to front markers.

#22...output to stoplight switch.

#21...output to rear harness.

#118..output to flasher fuse via inline fuse.

So it seems this connector is for the headlight switch. It also looks original to the truck. The switch you purchased also "seems" to be correct for your truck, yet it does not appear to match the stock looking connector. Something's gotta give. You could clip all the wires to ditch the plug and make direct connections to the switch. It would be kind of a shame to have to do that. As long as I've been knocking around these forums, I don't recall anyone else having this issue. I also know of only two styles of headlight switches used on these rigs. The 60's era style such as you've purchased and the 70's era style, which has a much different looking connector than is under your dash. Unless there was a third style of switch that was also used. I'm kind of at a loss here. I guess if it was my truck and I was desperate to make this replacement switch work, I'd be snipping wires and getting rid of that stock plug. That has to be your call though. I'm not advising you to do it.

Of course I would rather not cut the wires but I cannot find a headlight switch that this connector plugs into anyone bueller help

Another option if you don't want to cut the wires, is to find some male spade lugs that will plug into the connector you have, and make a "pigtail" with some short wires to tie the old connector into the new switch. Then tape up the connector. This will allow you to go back if you ever find a matching switch.

It looks like that switch is no longer available. I May have one from a 69 d series pickup.

Or you can by the connector for the 71-80 switch and splice that into your wiring harness. With the plug you May be able to remove the connectors the old plug housing and snap them into the new one. This May be the cleanest long term solution.

This looks like the switch for that application. Not a very good pic but it looks like all the terminals are in the right places. This was out of a '70 d 1200.
