392 Fan

I've also been thinking about running an electric fan. What cfm rating should I go with if I do? If anybody is running an electric (non junkyard variety), maybe post some pics or give me some advice. I'll more than likely go with the mechanical if I find one though. Any help is much appreciated
 
It's a swamp buggy. It's built off an old model 200 pickup. I think it was classified 1 1/4 ton (has Dana 70 front). I've pretty much got my mind set on a simple electric fan setup with a switch (just gotta remember to turn it off through the deep stuff). Just wondering what cfm rating would be sufficient for the 392
 
Interesting. Is there much of an enclosure around the engine bay? Got any pics? I can't tell you about cfm's. The 392 in my '74 sii does create considerably more under hood warmth than the 345 it replaced. So I wouldn't scrimp on fan output. Go big or go home. I think the IH propeller heads might have been on to something when they opted not to offer that engine in the Scout platform. Same external dimensions as a 345, so fitting is not an issue. Having a radiator with 20% less cooling surface and a tighter engine bay than the full size rigs is. Be that as it May, for the majority of my driving, the coolant temp stays smack in the sweet spot all day long. The only times I run into problems is out on the trail in warmer temps when I'm creeping or hill climbing.
 
I run an electric fan from a lincoln mark8. It's a two speed fan and blows a ton of air. The only time I turn the high setting on is when it' stationary and I'm using the welder for long periods of time.
My rig is a trail rig with a built, injected 392.

As for an electric fan, I've got no real world experience with 'em on my own stuff. But the big deal on 'em is a functional shroud that completely encloses the air-off side of the radiator with no non-shrouded portion of the radiator open.

I'm assuming you are currently running the oem truck radiator Mark?? If so, those are massive for those engine setup when used with the oem fan system. The actual use of a a thermo-control fan clutch has nothing to do with cooling system operation other than to cut down on engine-related noise at speed. And since you have no effective vehicle sheetmetal in front of the radiator, the noise thing means nothing and you do actually see a bit more air once you are running above 15>20mph.

So setting up an electric fan in your case is certainly viable, I'd use the one with the greatest volume you can find that fits the picture. Those can actually suk down 40>50 amps of current though at speed so keep that in mind.

The electric setup on maranda's pink Scout mud rig in this pic does a wonderful job once it's purged of all air. The radiator/fan came to monte through one of their sponsors so he'll have to reveal the source! I can't find the pics I have of the setup on it but will update this thread when I do.

By the way, the overall physical size of the Scout II radiator is about 20% smaller than the fullsize radiator you are probably running.

Do you just run it with a switch and manually turn it off and on. I'm gonna just get a junk yard fan that covers as much of the core as possible. By the way, that's a nice rig you got there
 
Thanks for the advice michael. And no, haven't gotten the carb yet but I'm so excited to see my baby running (much better) I can hardly stand it!

It's on a switch that's tied into the ignition system. Ignition on it's got power, that is on a three position switch. The switch goes to two relays, one for each on position.
