So the other day I got stuck in 2wd and when I put it into gear I got nothing. After verifying the driveshaft was turning and the hubs were locking I tore off the differential cover on my Dana 30 the cross shaft was in 2 peices and the spider gears where chewed up and laying on the bottom of the case.
I had always planned on going to a d44 but had planned to do it after a little time on the road to see how it held up, well I guess that time is now
found a complete Dana 44 on craiglslist for 150 and started tearing it down. Rather than just throw new gears in and call it good I decided to rebuild it all, all new seals, bearings, u joints etc
called up randys ring and pinion, great service and they where able to match some other online prices for the parts I needed and shipped for free.
Today 3 boxes showed up that I ordered Monday
2 4.88 Yukon ring and pinions
2 Yukon master install kits
2 set of timken wheel bearings
2 eaton e lockers
and a set of setup bearings
I havent ordered the ball joints or tie rod ends yet
Now I am still sprung under and plan to keep it that way for a while my lift springs and 2" body left clear my 33 m/ts pretty good, and I want to get this thing on the road with out the added work of getting stock springs, and doing hi steer right now
that said someday I plan to run 35's and decided to do the cut and turn now, as it will benefit me (although not required) even in my SUA configuration
I also would like to point the pinion at the transfer case since I am running cv front drive shaft
The cut and turn will allow me to do that without creating a horrible caster situation
