New scout 800/ Hello

Hey guys! New to the forum so hopefully this is in the right place.

I just got myself a Scout 800 that runs well and is in decent shape.

I don't have the vin tag in the engine bay so I don't know the exact year.

Things I know:
it's a 4-speed manual reverse being forward. A t-98
four wheel drive works great!
It's a four cylinder
it doesn't have a fold down windshield
the windshield wipers are on the bottom of the windshield.
It has "International" on the front grill
it has holes for where the backup lights should be.

Good things
has a working alternator swap
frames in great shape
has a working hydrolic plow
strong engine with new plugs, plug wires and taps
strong tranny that only grinds gears a little.
New gas pump, lines and a new tank.
All the gauges "work"

issues
babies got plenty of dents. News a decent about of body work. Lots of rust on the body.
Blinkers don't work
horn doesn't work
rear brakes don't work
shocks are shockingly bad (sorry about the pun)
gas gauge isn't working right.

What I want
I want to restore it the best that I can, and be able to drive it around for fun.

Things I need help with:

the horn:
the horn itself works fine. The other owner tore out the horn relay when they did the generator swap. So I got a new one and it works but the horn button doesn't connect to ground I guess. I got the steering wheel off (after a few days of tugging, swearing and then giving up and buying a puller) but not sure where to go from their. I can see that the red wire inside the steering column has been spliced. Not sure if it bypasses something or not.

Backup lights
I put the truck in reverse and checked the wires for power and only had 1.5 v ~ so I'm not sure if some power is going else where or not.

Blinkers
the aftermarket lights in the back light up and will kind of blink. When you select a turn signal on the steering column the correct blinker will turn off. Doesn't blink though.
Also when the headlights are on the brighter "brake" light will come on but it won't blink anymore.

Brakelights
I can see that the brake switch under the dash isn't connected to anything but I'm not sure which wires are suppose to connect to it.
(related comment there is an aftermarket key ignition)

parking brake
cables were cut right out of the rear axle.

Rear brakes
the rear wheel cylinders popped when the last owner put new guild in the lines. So I got two new ones but I found as I think most others have that those f-ing drum brake covers don't like to come off. I've soaked both for around a week straight with penetrating oil
but I can't find a puller large enough for those things. I tried heating them till they were red hot and smacking the piss out of them but it didn't work. Any suggestions?

Gas gauge
the gauge works when I connect it to ground it goes to full. But with a full take it wasn't reading anything. So I got a new sender and when I have the sender at full it only brings the gas gauge to about a 1/4 tank. To much resistance? (I have an aftermarket plastic tank)

last
I'm guessing I have a 65 (under the glovebox it says Scout 800)
it was registered as a 64 but without the fold down windshield and with the wipers where they are I figure that can't be. I can't find the frame vin but I found a serial number on the engine by the exhaust. Is there a way to read it to find the year? I doubt it.

Anyways excited to join the Scout fan base. I'm going to try and add some pics.

guess this forum isn't as active as I hoped

For a first post that was a lot of questions so its going to be hard for me or anyone else to dive in and help you out on each and every individual problem you have listed. I assume you have searched our forums for answers to some of these questions? If you did, some of these questions you would probably already have found an answer for. So after spending the weekend on it, do you still have all the same questions? If so I would break them down into the different categories and ask them in the appropriate sub-forums as it will be easier to assist you this way instead of lumping all your questions into one post.

Hey Jeff!

Sorry I'm an active member of a motorcycle forum that's very active so I was expecting a few "hi"s and "hellos". But that's okay

I've drove into the forum here and there. I followed one post about getting the steering wheel off and how to fix the horn but it ended very vaguely. As for the drum breaks most of what I've found is more penetrating oil, heat and hammering.

I was just hoping that if someone recognized an issue they could comment on.

In any case. Excited to be apart of the forum and I'm already in love with my Scout

Hi zach. Welcome. This is a fairly active forum, but like Jeff pointed out, any single post attempting to address so many individual, and somewhat unrelated issues is a bit overwhelming for anyone who might want to weigh in with advice. Ten different people addressing ten different questions in the same thread will turn into a hot mess in a hurry. His suggestion to place individual questions in the most appropriate categories is well intended. It will not only help you get better, more organized and easier to sort through responses, but it will also be easier for future readers to follow along and hopefully find a resolution that will help them with their own issue too. We're not bitch-slapping you by any means. Just suggesting a way that you can help us help you.

Welcome zach. Heavy IH iron is on the other side of the fence from the motor cycle world. I'm in both too. Never had a 80 so don't have much first hand experience to offer.

Hello scoutboy, crappie and big red.

Alright I'll try and split this thread up a bit.

But can we start here with trying to figure out the year this Scout 800 came from? Where on the frame should the serial number be? Would it be in the engine too? Then is there a way to read the number to give me a year

If you have the vin now, get on binder planet, there's a thread just for Scout 800 vin's. Binder bookie shud be able to tell you.

I have a registration vin but I don't know if it's the real one or one they made up for the truck. I'll try it out. Thanks

Should be on the drivers side frame near the shock tower & steering gear box. You'll really have to clean it good to bare metal ? Wire brush on a grinder. Dont grind, just wire brush.

So ran the vin from registration.

Came back as a 1965-1970 cadillac.... Soooo gonna try and find that frame vin haha

She's got some greesie panties so it might take me a bit to find that stamp.

Different question I have this knob by the shifter/parking brake that I have no idea what it's suppose to go to. The cables cut off right about where the parking brake attaches to that swing lever thing.

Looks like an old door know.

Old owner said it went to the diff to lock it. But like I said it's cut off and just ends.

Any idea what it is/where it's suppose to go?

I'd say maybe a pto on the trans ? Does your truck have a over-drive ? Nice gas pedal. Could also have been a throttle lock ? Snow plow pump control ( up & down for hydraulic cylinder ? ) if it's been cut off, then you should be able to find the other end or parts of it ? Get on your creeper and under the truck and start investigating.

I don't believe it's a pto. I haven't seen any spot for something to attach and use the engine power.

I also dont think I have an overdrive. I imagine I would notice but I'll scoot around underneath to check.

The pictures I've seen of the cabin don't have anything like it. That I've seen.

Plow controls are over by the ignition.

Thanks. I just made the pedal. It's nothing pretty but I imagine its better then pushing on the lever itself.

Your differentials, at least your rear anyway, is a powrlok limited slip. Not really a true locker, but it gets referred to as one much like people call adjustable locking pliars vice grips even if they are some other brand. A limited slip uses clutches and springs to "lock up" sort of. There's no cable, air or lecktreekyooshun involved to make it engage. Its fully automagic. So that knob does something besides what the po told you. It looks vintage and not like something aftermarket that was added by a po. I've seen similar looking knobs in a Scout II before that had both a pto winch and an overdrive box. I'm not sure which item the knob controlled in that Scout, but it for damn sure did one of them. You've got a twin stick t-case. Is the output to the rear inline with the trans or is it offset to the passenger side? Maybe get a light and a camera up under there for some shots of the trans and t-case from a couple angles while you're at it.
