Wiring harness install tips.

I just bought a 20 circuit harness (kwik wire) from IH Parts America for my Scout II. I pulled out the old harness and am working on routing the new one. I admittedly am learning as I go. I was wondering if anyone had any words of wisdom or things I should look out for while doing a rewire. I'm taking it slow and trying to do it right the first time. Thanks.

Do all your zip ties loose until you are finished, then go back and tighten them all. It is easier to straighten the wires out and make it look nice.

I’m putting a 12-circuit system from painless in my ’70 800a. One thing that I did was to pull all the old wiring harness out and laid it out adjacent to the Scout to use for reference.

I like the kwik wire product, however the instructions are a bit on the hokey side. What I suggest you do is log onto the painless website and navigate to their instruction page. Scroll down the list until you see a 20 circuit harness like you have. Download the pdf for free and print it out. All of the circuit numbers are the same between the two kits except one kit has an additional 9 digit. The painless instructions are much less ambiguous in my experience.

Thanks for the tips. I'm mostly through it, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. With the new harness is it still a good idea to use relays for the headlights? I'm running the upgraded headlights that Jeff sells and I have a beefed up alternator (around 85 amp I think).

I just wanted to say that it is an awesome product, I would recommend it to anyone. The first time that I keyed the ignition I was sold, the Scout fired right up without using the right pedal after it had been sitting for a while.
