I had an interesting day Saturday to say the least. It started with fwb john and I taking hooty and big girl up for a romp in the snow. Before we could really get into the good stuff, hooty started overheating pretty badly. We popped the hood, and john noticed that the heater box and heater hoses were pretty cool while everything else was hot. So we surmised that the thermostat was stuck closed preventing coolant flow to the heater core. We waited for a bit while the engine cooled and then I removed the water neck and pulled the thermo which did look kinda naztee. At that point we decided to call it a day and head back home. I was following big girl at a safe distance and what I felt was a safe speed. Everything was going fine until we came to this one hair-pin corner. This part of the road had seen heavy traffic so the snow was packed and the road surface was slicker than an obama campaign speech. John made it around without issue, but as I reached the apex of the corner, my azz end got real loose and I couldn't recover. In an instant, I was reduced to a helpless passenger along for the ride as hooty careened over the side of the downhill bank. Fortunately, I walked away without a scratch. Only my pride was bruised. Hooty wasn't quite as lucky, however most if not all of the damage is superficial. The d-side rear q-panel kissed a tree purdy hard, which probably prevented hooty from rolling over on that side, but he did wind up on his passenger side for a second before coming to rest on all fours. The engine was still running. Who needs fuel injection when a dam carb'll keep mixin' on it's side?
the attached pictures were all taken Sunday when we went to retrieve hooty and revisit the scene. Scott sinner and fwb cambo weren't up there Saturday when it happened, so their morbid curiosity had to be satisfied. These 2d images really don't do justice to how steep of a dropoff this is. Where hooty and I wound up was roughly 25 feet below the road. John and I spent the better part of 3 hours winching from multiple angles to first get the front end sucked around and pointed back towards the road, and then get the 'ol boy winched back up onto the road. There were plenty of gawkers, but no real offers of help. So john and I busted ass and we gotter dun our owndamselvz. We worked that poor hft 8k winch about as hard as it could be worked, but it was up to the challenge. It trully paid for itself as I'm willing to bet a lot of folks in that situation would have looked thangs over and called for a tow truck. We got it back on the road just as darkness was beginning to fall. I'd been running the engine/trans in 4lo trying to help the winch out what little I could. In doing so, I got the coolant real hot again. So much so that I was only able to drive it a short ways before I decided to shut it down, remove some valuables, and pile into big girl with john for the depressing ride home. We just didn't have time to hang out on that freezing mountain in the dark waiting for the engine to cool back down.
As the pics show, I need a new windshield frame and glass, p-side front fender and the hood is a bit tweaked too. I've got a good line on a fender and a hood, but if anyone in the club knows of a good sii windshield frame (preferrably with glass intact) that an fwb cud mebbe git hiz paws on fer not too much cabbage, please send me a pm or email. Other than sheetmetal and glass, the power train, drive train, and running gear seem to be unscathed. We had to use crowbars and a bfh to get the hood open as the fender was smushed over quite a ways. I added a little over a gallon of water to top off the radiator, then stabbed the throttle, hit the key and the big 392 fired right up like normal. I was able to drive it all the way to my house with no issues. The engine sounded fine and the rig seemed to matriculate down the road the same as before. So all in all, I feel very fortunate. This deal could have easily been a lot worse on so many levels. Hooty is one tough customer. Now if he cud ever git a driver behind the wheel that's worth a shit, we might jes have sumthin'.
