I am having problems with the new toy. This is my first Scout and I just got it a couple months ago. The first sign of trouble was the carburetor that was puking gas everywhere, so I rebuilt it. Then it was having trouble running for more than 5-10 mins. This ended up being the pick up in the dist. Replaced the pick up and still had same problem, distributor was bad, so I replaced that, and the coil cap and rotor. Now it is acting like the timing is off- backfires through carb and tailpipe acting like it is starved for gas but has plenty, acting like timing is off but set it last night with a light was running great, woke up this morn and it wont start, what am I missing?????? Please help

Welcome.

Little more info is needed. What year and which motor do you have? 4, 6, or 8? If it's a stock IH sv8 then the timing is off the #8 plug wire. Not #1 like other manufacturers

What distributor? Points or electronic? What number do you think you have your timing set at? How did you go about routing your plug wires? Which cylinder number did you start with? Please describe the steps you took when you installed the replacement distributor to insure that your static timing was within spec before you tried to fire up. Don't be shy on the details. We aren't there to see what you have going on. By your description, I'm thinking you missed a step. Hard starting and back fires are pretty good indicators that the timing is off.

Thank you for chimming in to help scoutboy......they gave me the wrong distributor at the parts store.....now I gotta wait 2 weeks and send them my old one because they don't even offer a replacement part for it they gotta rebuild mine........the joy of old trucks....
