time to start the life!

I have a 79 traveler, 345 4bbl, 727 tf and d44's. Basic stuff. Engine was bought from a IH dealer in 1988. It has been sitting since then. It has not had oil run through it or cranked over.

I have been lazy and the engine has been sitting. Sooooo....:
I have the time to get it running and I am starting slowly. First things first:" need to take off and check questions:
1. Since the block has been sitting since "88, I should change out the valve seals, right? Also check for any surface rust.
2. Any recommendations on the valve seals to replace? Standard ihc seals, umbrellas, teflon? Any thoughts?
3.

I don't know about the seals. Others will hopefully weigh in on that. What I can say in case you were entertaining the notion...don't dry crank the engine. The lubrication system should be primed in advance of any rotation. This involves removing the distributor so that the oil pump can be driven with a drill motor. There's a sticky thread hereabouts that explains all the why's and wherefores. Once I locate it, I'll make a link so you can learn all about it.

Edit...its the very first sticky thread in this gas engine section. Click on that one, scroll down to post #3 and you'll see a pdf attachment "old iron pt 1". The engine lubrication diagram attached above it in post #2 is also educational.

I plan to take my time, very slowly getting this tank back together. I will be asking lots of questions as I go, and will post pictures as I go.

I see where IHPA s selling "umbrella" seals for the v8 valves. What is the benefit over the stock seals: pros and cons? I have pair of heads that have been sitting for 20 years, never used, that I took off the 345 (never fired, never used) and want to make sure the valve seals are good. Since the block has been sitting for 20 years (covered), I am thinking the valve seal would be hard and not pliable as they should be.

Please advise?
