Ticking noise

I had the transmission rebuilt in my Scout last year. Ever since then there would be a "ting" noise right when I put it into gear or as soon as there was a load put on it, like taking off from a stop. It would do it once then nothing until recently. Now when I am driving, and not all the time, there is a ticking when the engine is under load. I can let off the throttle and it goes away. The ticking is rpm related, sounds like maybe a loose convertor bolt hitting or something of that sorts. I pulled the dust cover. All bolts are tight. There is no evidence, metal, of anything rubbing or hitting in the convertor area. I pulled the oil filter and cut it open looking for metal, none. I checked the fan it is not hitting anything. Any help would be much appreciated. I am not sure where to go next. Thanks in advance. Justin
 
Are you sure it's the transmission? The transfer cases will kind of rattle if you lug them in 2 hi, even warns you about it in the operators manual.try resting your hand on the transfer case knob when its rattling and see if the noise goes away.
 
Thanks for the reply. Well no, I am not 100% it is in the tranny. It doesn't seem to matter 2 or 4 hi. I am not really lugging it. I should have been a little more clear. It is just while on the throttle ,light load, like driving. I only drive it around town. I do not drive it hard by any means. It will not do it idling or in neutral. I just took it on a short drive. It made a tink when I put it in reverse going out of the driveway and nothing else the whole trip. I manually shifted it and left it in drive. Definetly an intermittent problem.
 
Hondo you are making me think...I did reseal the d20 when the trans was being rebuilt. Does anyone know if something in there could be loose and make contact intermittently??
 
I did check those. They are tight. Not sure when they were replaced as I have only owned the Scout for a year and a half. They are not serviceable. So probably not original.

The one thing I keep coming back to is it started after I installed the transmission. I resealed the transfer case and pulled the oil pan to check things out because the engine had the oil changed once a decade. I have gone back and checked , rechecked the assembly and all looks good.
 
I only home in on the joints because if you're hearing clunks when going from park into drive and especially into reverse, you can just about bet on it being time to replace them. But that clunk usually isn't heard once driving, just during initial gear engagement. Sometimes it can be exacerbated by having the engine idle speed set too high. Your description differs in that it is also noticeable while you're in motion. The intermittent nature of it makes it especially tough. Wish you could get a video up of the noise.
 
If you have a trackloc or powerloc in the rear they do make sounds like you describe. My Scout has done that with both types of lockers installed.
 
It does have the stock trac-lok. Any way to check that? I need to change the ring and pinion so maybe I will just pull it and check it out.
 
Intermittent problems are the worst. When you drop it into gear the motor and tranny usually twitch a little, so before I dug too deep, I would make sure nothing is hanging loose that could be swinging and pinging on something. When you had the tranny out, you probably disconnected the exhaust and emergency brake cable, check those as well. Probably want to double check the motor and transmission mounts while your at it.
 
That is exactly what it sounds like, something hitting the exhaust or driveshaft, when I put it into gear. And that's initially what I thought, I left something loose. I have been under a couple of times and double checked my install. And you guys probably know the exhaust is tight between the frame and t-case. But it is ok.

I have been driving it this week and it hasn't made any noise. But last night it did it while driving. I took off from a stop sign, turning left and it started ticking or tapping. I let off the throttle and it went away. No more noise last night or today.

Sorry for the long winded post but you guys have got me thinking. When I installed the front 44, I installed an aussie locker. The hubs are unlocked but could that be my noise?? It does seem to happen after turning. But it did make the tap when going into gear before that was installed. And the locker hadn't made any noise for 5 months.
 
The clutches in a trackloc will chatter like that. Best thing I've found to quiet them down is red line synthetic oil for limited slip dif's.
