think i may need a moter

K so the other day I pulled off my valley pan to reseal it amd I left a red rag in the valley but I didnt know I did that and I put it all back togethere and drove the truck around and it ran fine, all my new guages worked.:smile5:

then on Monday well I was driving to school my engin started a top end nock so I looked at my oil pressure an it was at zero:confused: I shut off the engin and pulled over. I popped the hood, got out and took off the oil cap and I looked at my rocker arms and they were almost dry.:cryin:

my Dad took the Jeep and pulled the Scout home. After getting it home I took dained the oil and found bits of rag in it. So I polled the pan and found that the oil pump has been clogged up with bits of the rag. :mad2:

today I pulled off the valley pan and found that the rag has become rapped around the cam shaft. So right now im slowly pulling off the rag and im going to check the bearings and the rocker arms. :mad2:

I think I caught it just in time and can save it but just incase im looking for anothere engin:icon_domokun:

Wow. I don't know what else to say. I hope things work out for you. Keep an eye on craigslist for an engine. Good luck.

Bummer dude! I hate it when that happens.
Hopefully none of the fibers are clogging your oil passages. With any luck the debris will flush out when you restart the engine. :icon_rolleyes: good luck.

Obs from what you said, you could be okay. I know you mentioned putting in a brand new mechanical oil gauge in around the same time as the valley pan gasket and you were watching the gauge (since it was new after all) to make sure the pressure was good or consistent and the gauge was reading properly. I also know when you heard the engine make noise you shut it down rather than continue on and possibly wreck the engine (we still don't now for sure).

One thing I have seen is IH motors are resilient. I think if you can get the "fibers" out (from the human eye) you could be okay. Don't forget there are a lot of oil passage ways that help keep the motor properly lubed. For example if you pull the valve covers off you will see little pin drain holes in the heads that allow the overflow of low oil to seep back into the pan lubing everything along the way. Oil will break down the cotton rag... Perhaps someone else knows of a better way to break down the fibers for less oil changes (trans fluid, brake fluid, something else that can be mixed with oil for a short time). If it is not wrecked oil changes should be frequent. Good luck, I have a spare motor, but I think I already gave it away and it does need a rebuild so yours May be a better candidate for that anyway.

Good luck, let me know if you need anything or any other advice/help.

I ran my 345 about 15 miles with no oil in it. I blew out the gasket behind the oil filter housing on my way home one night. Being in a bad mood I drove it anyhow. I put in a new gasket and filled it up with oil. It knocked like hell for about 15 minutes then it settled down and ran fine.

Well after finding the rag I got depressed aand went on vacation. And my Dad needs to look at the bearings cause I dont no what im looking at. I dont think its bad cause the thing could start and run fine it just nocked a little and if worse comes to worse ill have to pull it

Re: think i may need a motor

Right now according to my bank account that's the plan :mad2: all tho we did find a motor on Craig's list for $500 (seams a little pricy?)

Not sure if it will help, but there is an engine in the stockton pick-n-pull. I didnt identify it, but it had a 2 barrel carb so its probably a 304 - 345?. It was complete though. It was in a 72-73 3/4 ton pickup. Hope this helps.

Re: think i may need a motor

Are you guys doing the rebuild yourselves? What are your plans on what you are going to do?

Going to have a local machine shop do a long-block. Hope to get it into the shop tomorrow (Monday).we are going to get motor mounts & oil pump pick up from I.h. Only.we are also looking at a cam they recommend. Have to see what our tight budget will allow.
