The Sad Starter

It got down to -14degrees here two nights ago with a -30degree wind chill. Cold by most standards although its been much colder before. I knew it was gonna be a bad day when I woke up and my dog was asleep drooling on my new leather couch. Dog punished I went outside to fire up my terra thats as cold blooded as any diesel. Hopped in it cringing as my new seats complain under my hind end. Turn the key over. Get two cranks in and hear a god aweful noise and then no crank. I hop out of my pickup dreading what it May be. Pop the hood and disconnect my battery cable. Reach my hand down the passenger side of my Scout and sure enough my starter is wiggling around. I've never had both bolts break and further more im not sure how both of them broke. But I was sad. Cant fix it right now cause im not fond of laying in the snow. But its gonna be a pain getting the old threads out all the same. So for now I have a sled hooked up behind my great pyrenees/husky mix and am considering getting an IH logo to attach to her butt. :frown5:

I imagine the starter was already loose and jiggling around. All the same bad day

Ouch, get that 240 wieght oil out of there:d:d

that does s_ck! It always breaks when it's the worst time to work on it.

Ron

It does always seem to happen at the worst time huh. I imagine murpy has something to say about that. :prrr: hey them tractor engines need tractor oil lol

Bummer about the starter. I try and do a good check over of my Scout in the fall. Hasn't prevented all the break downs, but it helps. Unfortunately that would not have helped in your situation.

You might try a left handed drill bit. It might get a bite and just screw the broken bolts out. They already have given the indication they were loose.

I have my set of easy outs but I May try that first when the snow melts. Yeah that was pure neglect on my part not looking over my terra and now im paying for it. Got lazy cause we were having such a nice mild winter. Lesson learned

Yes that reminds me that I need to do my fall inspection/grease on the Scout. Fortunately I now have a carport and it doesn't snow here to often.

Lucky. I have my garage but the wizards who designed my house 40 years ago put my garage in the back of my house. And the first alley intrance was blocked off and given to some hotshot as part of his house so now its become such an annoyance to drive around the block and to the end of the alley then back down the alley to my house that I've just been parking my Scout out front :frown2:

Im working on that. Sadly im 19 and the best I could do was a house in town. Not only that but every vehicle I own gets under 20 miles to the gallon and it makes travel annoying over long distances lol. And I usually go to rmihr :frown2: thats like 4 fillups on the way

I am blaming you ihrunner!! The steering gear just went out of my 74 today:icon_evil:
if you had not started this post!!! Now I have to go out in the cold and fix my Scout, I hope your happy;););););););)

at least I have a shop to work in, just have to start the wood stove.

Ron

Wow. Its that carma stuff. Got to treat those scouts nice. Could be worse. I got the new bolts put in and it still wont fire up lol. I promise from now on to not make red power dangerous posts.

Maybe this will change the luck here - I just got the trannies swapped in my trucks and drove the good one ( in reverse ) under it's own power for the first time in almost two years. Everything went rather smoothly, too.

Well not quite ihrunner, I got the steering gear out of my 75 and put it in the 74. Started the 74 up to flush the steering gear and I hear "tick, tick ,tick" and so on, I found the fan cluth is going bad:frown5: and hitting the shroud. Took it off the jacks and found the same thing. So tonight its back to a solid fan, then nothing else is going to happen right?
I will say I am glad it happened now instead of on my 8 hour round trip Christmas visit next weekend.

Ron

Well I took this as a warning and spent some quality time under the Scout today. Everything is greased and looks good.
