Testing 4wd indicator light switch

My light doesn't work and I'm trying to diagnose the problem. I think it is is the switch. I took it out and put my multimeter on it. I get continuity between the poles when the plunger is out. I also get continuity when the plunger is in. I assume this isn't correct. I would assume the circuit would be open when the plunger is out and closed when it is in, right? I think that is what the manual says but I wanted to be sure before I ordered the switch. Thanks for any help you can offer.

I think that's right. There are provisions in the outboard shifter rail that correspond with 4 lo & hi range positions which I'm pretty sure allow the plunger to extend, thus opening the ground circuit. Sounds like yours went ta-ta's up.
